Remarks by Honorary Degree Recipients
On Saturday, June 14 Drexel
celebrated its 116th Commencement during four ceremonies honoring its graduates.
The ceremonies
were held at the University’s Main Campus at the John A. Daskalakis
Athletic Center. The five individuals noted on this page received honorary
degrees.

a.m.: Bennett S. LeBow College of Business John
Bogle
Founder and former chairman of The Vanguard Group
The
Valley Forge, Pa.-based Vanguard Group is the world’s first
and largest no-load mutual funds organization. Fortune magazine
named Bogle as one of the investment industry’s four giants
of the 20th century. After retiring in 1999, Bogle has continued
his financial research at The Bogle Financial Markets Research Center.

Matthews
Broadcast journalist
Philadelphia
native Chris Matthews has worked as a print journalist, presidential
speechwriter and congressional staffer. Matthews is the host of
the daily MSNBC program “Hardball with Chris Matthews.”

John
W. Rowe
President and CEO of Exelon Corporation
John
Rowe oversees operation of the Chicago-based Exelon Corporation,
one of the country’s largest utilities providers, with approximately
five million electric and natural gas customers and more than $15
billion in annual revenues. Prior to his current position, Rowe
served as chairman, CEO and president of Unicom Corp., which merged
with PECO Energy to create Exelon.

Evgeny
Pavlovich Velikhov
President of the Kurchatov Institute, Moscow, Russia
As
president of the Kurchatov Institute, Velikhov is the lead scientist
on projects such as the safe development of nuclear power, controlled
thermonuclear fusion, nuclear physics and solid state physics and
superconductivity. He is chairman of an international consortium
working to develop a thermonuclear pilot reactor. From 1977-1996,
Velikhov served as the Vice President of the USSR/Russian Academy
of Sciences.

Patti
LaBelle
Grammy winning singer, best-selling author and humanitarian
Philadelphia
native Patti LaBelle has been recording music for nearly 40 years
and has over 30 LPs and two Grammys to her credit. The author of
two best-selling books, LaBelle has served as a spokesperson for
such medical causes as AIDS, diabetes and cancer.
