Speakers Bank

The Speakers Bank is a list of presentations and/or workshops proposed by Drexel University faculty and staff, and local non-profit agencies. Presentations and workshops are offered on a variety of topics related to the First-Year Drexel Experience. University 101 instructors may contact speakers directly to schedule presentations. Please allow 2-weeks notice to schedule; no speaker on the list is guaranteed to be available at any specific time.

The Drexel Experience:

“The Triangle” – It’s Free, It’s available, and It Has Everything You Want to Know…
The Triangle is an award-winning, independent student newspaper that strives to keep all members of the Drexel University community informed and make them aware of the events that affect their lives. This workshop will serve as an introduction to students to learn how to find out about events and activities happening on campus and in Philadelphia, and how to get involved.

“Drexel Sports – For Me?”
Not many students know the fact that while there are 16 varsity sports with about 350 varsity athletes that there are 26 club sports and 800 students! This workshop will introduce both the varsity sports program and the recreational sports program at Drexel to students and how they can participate or cheer on the Dragons! “Speak Greek” An Introduction to Fraternity and Sorority Life at Drexel University
This Introduction workshop introduces fraternity & sorority life, its emergence on the college campus nationally and locally at Drexel University, and the guiding principles of the organizations. Do you know the history of Greek Letter Organizations? Why are there chapter values and rituals? Learn important information about Greek Life's history, governance structures, and the relationships between chapters and their host institutions. “Internet Addiction”

Health and Wellness:

“Do you Ever?”
This workshop focuses on the health and legal risks associated with alcohol. Learn the facts about alcohol and see how it could affect your life. Learn how to navigate the alcohol filled waters of college life, how to recognize a problem, how to reduce risky behavior and get informed about the laws in Pennsylvania. “Hazing, Alcohol, & You!”

“Before the Lights Go Out”
Learn the truth about sexually transmitted infections through this program. Only knowing the myths could get you in trouble. To arrange a workshop contact the Office of Alcohol, Other Drug, and Health Education at (215) 895-6072.

“Feeling Risky?”
Are you taking sexual risks? Do you have your facts straight? Improve your sexual health knowledge. Learn the signs and symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections and discuss responsible behaviors. To arrange a workshop contact the Office of Counseling and Health at (215) 895-1660.

“Acquaintance Rape”
Most rapes occur by someone the victim knows. Learn the facts about one of the most under-reported crimes and how you can avoid becoming a victim. To arrange a workshop contact the Office of Counseling and Health at (215) 895-1660.

“Body Image and Eating Disorders”
How can I feel good about myself in such a body conscious society? Learn about the importance of developing a positive body image and its impact on self-esteem. “Date Rape”
International Area Studies has developed a student-made video to illustrate the issues, concerns, and difficulties for women regarding date rape. Student Peer Trainers and Counseling staff are available to discuss stalking, dating violence, and violence to women in and around campus. Money Management:

“Banking On Our Future”
Banking On Our Future (BOOF) is Operation HOPE's financial literacy program for students through 19 years of age. Representatives from BOOF educate teens and young adults about the basics of banking, checking & savings accounts, insurance, and credit. They also explain the luxuries of and warnings about credit cards and credit abuse. Find more information at www.bankingonourfuture.org. C.A.R.E. Program (Credit Abuse Resistance Education)
The CARE Program was founded by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge John C. Ninfo II, to educate students about credit abuse: credit cards, loans, consumer credit, and bankruptcy. Visit the website: www.careprogram.us/presentation.php for more information and classroom resources: PowerPoint presentations, handouts, videos, classroom games, presentation tips, quizzes, and various other resources and links to assist you with educating your students about the dangers of credit abuse.

“Secret History of the Credit Card”
PBS Frontline offers this online introduction and discussion about credit cards (hidden fees, laws, expectations, companies, etc.). The website offers 5 video clips, tips, interviews, quizzes, and a teacher’s guide for use in the classroom. Log onto: www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/credit/ to print out the teacher’s guide and view the material before sharing with your class.

CCGP (Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania)
This Philadelphia-based organization provides speakers, workshops, and online resources to educate about the dangers of gambling and to determine if someone has a gambling problem. Contact Drexel’s Center for Civic Engagement if your class is interested in this topic – a UNIV 101 workshop can be scheduled.

Credit-ED
Size up your credit smarts...see how good you are at credit management, budgeting and more. Score high enough and get Credit-ED Certified. Credit-ED is a Citigroup/Citibank financial education program. This online program includes the “Use Credit Wisely” mini-movie and “know when to stop” interactive movie. In addition to some information about managing finances there is a Credit-ED test where students can print out a certificate showing that they took and eventually passed the test. Multiculturalism:

“Multiculturalism – Diversity Awareness & Appreciation”
Introduce and expose students to the different cultures, traditions, and perspectives that thrive in Philadelphia. This presentation will help students identify various forms of intolerance and offer a sense of identity and individuality.
