Significant Dates & Events – FALL 2008
Week of September 22: Representatives from Drexel Democrats and Drexel Republicans, in conjunction with the university’s Drexel Votes 2008 campaign, to make brief presentations about voter registration and to provide registration materials for all first year students.
Monday, September 29: Voter Registration Rally in Korman Quad (3:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.). Additionally, the Community Partners (placement sites) where students will complete their civic engagement assignment will be on hand to allow students to sign up early for their civic engagement activity.
Wednesday, October 1: Civic Engagement orientations will begin in each section.
Saturday, October 4: Health and Wellness Fair (11:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.) sponsored by Drexel’s 11th Street Family Health Center and the Greater Philadelphia Federation of Settlements. This service site is easily accessible by the subway, and the CCE will provide tokens to students who choose to participate in this activity.
Saturday, October 11: City-Year Serve-a-Thon is a one-day service event led by City Year corps members to help build stronger communities and create positive change in the City of Philadelphia. City Year corps members partner with corporations, schools, and community volunteers to complete high-impact, transformative projects such as painting murals, improving playgrounds and beautifying community spaces. For more information on how you can become involved in City Year Greater Philadelphia’s Serve-a-thon, contact Ian Rees at 267-386-7045 or mrees@cityyear.org or Seth Jacobson at saj33@drexel.edu.
Wednesday, October 15: 2008 Presidential Campaign Proxy Debate. More details to follow, but essentially representatives from the Obama and McCain campaigns will present a Proxy Debate in advance of the election, and will focus specifically on issues related to college students and future leaders (e.g., financing higher education, healthcare reform, the Iraqi War, etc.).
Saturday, October 18: 15th Annual Philly Cares Day Volunteer-A-Thon. In a single day, volunteers will devote more than 70,000 hours of service to Philadelphia public schools. This is a great service opportunity for those interested in large group projects. The CCE will provide tokens for students to get to the Mann Center (central location), and if colleges/schools are interested in sending large groups of students they will be responsible for that nominal fee (for groups of 46 or more, the fee is $120).
Thursday, October 30: Colonial Athletic Association Blood Drive Challenge (8:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M.), Creese Student Center. A large number of volunteers will be needed for this event, and it is a great way for students to complete their civic engagement requirement here on campus. The link for the challenge is http://www.drexel.edu/slas/giveblood/.
Friday, October 31: Conclusion of Civic Engagement orientations for UNIV 101 sections.
Week of November 3: Distribution/completion of course evaluations for UNIV101.
Tuesday, November 4: Election Day Poll Watchers are needed through the Committee of 70 (Philadelphia’s non-partisan watchdog). Students may complete their civic engagement requirement through this event. To sign up, please go to: http://www.seventy.org/.
