Get Out in Town: Paleopalooza
With all the activities on Drexel's campus, it's easy to forget that there's a whole world-class city just steps away. The Get Out in Town series will highlight things going on in Philadelphia from hidden gems and seasonal activities to bizarre attractions and must sees that even a college student on a budget can afford. It seems fitting to start off with one of Drexel's own.
February: Paleopalooza at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
A Little History
In 2011 Drexel University and the Academy of Natural Sciences joined forces through a formal affiliation agreement to promote further education, discovery, and civic engagement in the natural and environment sciences. Drexel's Department of Biodiversity, Earth, and Environmental Science (BEES) brings scientists together from Drexel and the Academy to advance research and provide unprecedented access to the Academy's collections to Drexel students. All Drexel students and staff now enjoy free admission to the museum with their Drexel IDs.
Taking place annually over President's Day weekend, Paleopalooza is, well, exactly what it sounds like - a paleontological nerd-fest. Perfect.
Events throughout the weekend include
- Tours of Dinosaur Hall at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. each day
- Lectures by famous paleontologists
- Meet and greets with scientists from the Academy's Paleontology Department who will share their research
- Fossil displays from the Academy's collections and interactive exhibits from the Delaware Valley Paleontological Society
- A live animal show addressing the question "Are dinosaurs really extinct?"
- Oh, and trilobite races — custom-made "hot rod trilobites" racing for survival
For the little kid in you, there will also be a balloon artist on hand, as well as several dinosaur-themed musical performances.
