Article Submissions

Guidelines

  • Acknowledgments
  • Capitalization
  • Endnotes
  • Figures
  • Foreign Words (First Use)
  • Length & Format
  • Numbers
  • Short Biography
  • Tables
Provide a brief acknowledgments paragraph in an unnumbered endnote, immediately preceding the numbered endnotes.
Be judicious in using capitals. Do not capitalize words such as colonial, republic (unless it is included in the name of a country), audiencia, viceroy, bishopric. However, capitalize "church" when referring to the Roman Catholic Church.

Submit articles with endnotes, not footnotes.

  • Separate each citation within endnotes and throughout the article with a semicolon.
  • Use "Ibid." (capitalized, not italic) for citations that repeat the previous source citation. If the page number is different, use Ibid., followed by the page numbers using "p." or "pp." as appropriate. Avoid op. cit. and loc. cit.
  • Write out the full name of each month: October, not Oct. Use the month dd, yyyy or month yyyy format for publication dates: January 22, 2012; May 2009.

Archival sources: Maintain consistency when citing primary or archival sources.

Book: Author, Title: Subtitle (Place of Publication: Publisher, Date), page numbers.

Example: Peter Winn, The Changing Face of the Americas (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1999), p. 150.

Subsequent citations of the same book: Author Last Name, Shortened Title, page numbers.

Example: Winn, Changing Face, pp. 12-14.

Article: Author, "Title of Article," Title of Journal volume:number (month year), page numbers.

Example: Jeffrey M. Pilcher, "Tamales or Timbales: Cuisine and the Negotiation of Mexican National Identity, 1821-1911," The Americas 53:2 (October 1995), pp. 193-216.

Subsequent citation of an article already documented: Author’s Last Name, "Shortened Title," page numbers.

Example: Pilcher, "Tamales," p. 195.

Multiple sources within a single endnote: Cite each source, separated by semicolons. If the multiple citations constitute a sentence (for example, "See also . . ."), insert "and" before the last source.

Submit each figure as a separate .jpg file (scan at 300 dpi or above); name each file so that it is clearly tied to your article file. Do not embed Figures directly into manuscript text. Create one Word file, and list complete source citations for each jpg. file. For each figure, note in the article manuscript, in boldface: "Insert Figure X here."
Italicize words or phrases not generally familiar to an academic audience in your field, and only the first time they occur in an article. After each such word or phrase, insert a translation in parentheses, not italicized. Example: malabarista (juggler).
Manuscripts should generally not exceed 10,000 words, not including endnotes. Submit manuscripts double-spaced, as Word .doc files or .rtf (rich-text-format) files. Do not apply special paragraph styles or formats; the final layout is managed in the typesetting process. Do insert page numbers at the top right of each manuscript page. Also, see the "Tables" and "Figures" sections.
Spell out numbers under 11. For numbers 11 and above, use figures. Spell out centuries: nineteenth century.
Provide a brief biography as a separate file, clearly indicated. Bios should be approximately 50-75 words and include publications dates (only) for any cited works.
Submit all tables, clearly numbered, in one separate Word file. Do not embed Tables directly into manuscript text. Name each file so it is clearly tied to the article file. In the same file, provide a complete source note for each table. For each table, note in the article manuscript, in boldface: "Insert Table X here."

Submit the article as an e-mail attachment to our editorial offices at americas@drexel.edu. Please include your last name and the document file name in the Subject line of the transmission e-mail. Submissions may also be sent to:
