About

The Americas has been one of the principal English-language journals of Latin American history since 1944. We publish articles and reviews in history and ethnohistory about all geographical regions of the Americas and their Iberian background. Articles may be submitted in any language. Foreign-language articles accepted for publication will be translated into English by the journal.

Founded by the Academy of American Franciscan History, the journal prides itself on providing a bridge between scholars of all the Americas and on presenting a range of subjects and perspectives.

Article submissions should be grounded in archival research done in Latin American and/or the Iberian Peninsula and may cover any range of topics dealing with the economic, political, cultural, social, religious, diplomatic or intellectual history of Latin America, the Atlantic World, and the U.S.-Mexican Borderlands. Research that places these themes in a comparative framework is also welcome. The journal takes a special interest in the history of the Franciscan presence in the Americas. Submissions are also encouraged for the "Research Notes" section, an occasional feature that explores historiographical debates and in-depth analysis of select archival documents.

The journal periodically publishes in-depth interviews with senior scholars. Recent interviews include Richard Greenleaf, Stanley Stein, Paul Vanderwood, Stafford Poole, Josefina Zoraida Vázquez, and Arnold Bauer.

Doctoral candidates are encouraged to apply for the Academy of American Franciscan History dissertation fellowship, offered annually.
