A Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHG) is an institution’s impact on the environment as measured in greenhouse gasses emitted in units of equivalent tons of carbon dioxide and is often referred to as an institution’s “Carbon Footprint.” The purpose of Drexel University’s inventory is to benchmark the University’s greenhouse gas emissions, provide a consistent methodology for inventorying the emissions on a regular basis and understanding what steps will be necessary to reduce the institution’s carbon footprint.

The University’s inventory was performed by Pennoni Associates which was selected after a public RFP on the basis of the firm's expertise and extensive credentials in sustainability matters dating back to the mid-1960s. The inventory was produced in accordance with the protocol defined by the Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard developed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative. This inventory only includes Scope 1 – Direct Emissions from University owned assets and Scope 2 – Indirect Emissions from purchased energy. Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008) was chosen as the University’s reporting base year.

The total greenhouse gas emissions for Drexel University for fiscal year 2008 is: 41,369 Metric tonnes of Equivalent Carbon Dioxide for the University City Main Campus.
