Study Tropical Biodiversity and Its Conservation on Bioko Island
The Study Abroad Office is accepting applications on a rolling admissions basis for the Drexel Biodiversity Study Abroad Program on Bioko Island, with a final deadline of Friday, May 15, 2009 for fall 2009.

Located 20 miles off the coast of Cameroon in west central Africa, Bioko is a part of the African country of Equatorial Guinea. The island of Bioko is one of the most beautiful and biologically-significant places in Africa. It is home to Africa's greatest concentration of endangered primates and to more than 50 unique species of plants.

The Drexel Bioko Biodiversity Program is run in conjunction with the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program (BBPP), part of the academic partnership between the National University of Equatorial Guinea and Drexel. The program includes individual field research projects at the Moka Wildlife Center in the Southern Highlands of Bioko, coursework at National University of Equatorial Guinea in the capital city of Malabo and additional hands-on fieldwork in the tropical forests, mountains, lakes and beaches of Bioko Island.

Students will receive 18 to 22 quarter credits or 12 to 15 semester credits for successful completion of the program. While all coursework will be in English, the national language of Equatorial Guinea is Spanish, thus students are required to have one year of university-level Spanish.

For more information about the program, visit http://www.drexel.edu/studyabroad, make an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor at 215-571-3558 or stop by the Study Abroad Office in room 3019, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Greening the Post-Industrial City: Innovative Reuse of Philadelphia's Idle Lands
Academy of Natural Sciences
Philadelphia is at a crossroads. No longer the industrial hub it once was, the city finds itself confronted with a dual reality: while defined areas act as beacons of community vitality, many others are characterized by clear signs of disinvestment. Considered symptoms of urban decline, Philadelphia's tens of thousands of vacant or underutilized properties are also the key to creating the economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future we want for our city and ourselves. Before we can achieve these goals, however, we need to explore the many issues surrounding the reuse of these idle, potentially-contaminated parcels, and must recognize and understand the roles of innovative engineering and design solutions in creating livable, eco-friendly, vital urban places.

This conference will bring together stakeholders representing city, state and federal government; academia; non-profit organizations; and the private sector for the purpose of sharing information related to the city's current stock of idle lands, the steps necessary to acquire and redevelop them, as well as the many innovative and sustainable reuse options. Intended as a catalyst for action and for the formation of new partnerships among participating organizations, the event will include discussions of real world applications and current research, and will better prepare attendees to engage in sustainable redevelopment activities throughout Philadelphia.

Day 1 TOPICS INCLUDE:
Logistics of Locating and Acquiring Idle/Underutilized Land in Philadelphia Regulatory, Legal and Funding Issues Surrounding Brownfields Assessment and Redevelopment Practitioners' Experiences with Redevelopment and Community Involvement

Student Conference on Global Challenges 2009
Energy and Environment
Sponsored by the Office of International Programs
8:30am - 4:30pm
The Office of International Programs will present the second annual Student Conference on Global Challenges, "Energy & Environment” – Cooperate, Coordinate and Collaborate," on Friday, February 20, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Market Streets).

Some of today's biggest global challenges are related to the need to provide clean, safe, efficient, and affordable energy and promote sustainable development. These challenges must be addressed locally and globally, and from a variety of different perspectives: scientific, economic, political, social and cultural.

The conference will bring together undergraduate and graduate students to discuss these global challenges in student panels on Global Media, Global Business Trends, Global Social and Economic Issues, Global Health, Global Science, Technology and Society, and Global Justice and Human Rights. Students will lead the panel discussions and faculty experts will moderate them.

“Climate Change, Energy Choices and You” - 3:15 pm Behrakis Grand Hall A

Through its early appointments, the Obama Administration has indicated it is serious about responding to climate change and reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. But in the midst of a financial crisis, it is difficult to find capital to invest in a new energy future that will ensure a stable climate. What constitutes a prudent and cost-effective response to climate change? How can we reduce our emissions while reinvigorating the economy, rebuilding our energy infrastructure, and fostering renewable energy resources? What can each of us do to conserve energy and protect the future environment? These questions define one of the greatest challenges in the history of mankind. We must be prepared to answer them prior to the 15th Conference of the Parties of the Climate Convention to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark in December of this year.

Jerald L. Schnoor, Ph.D., P.E., DEE
Allen S. Henry Chair in Engineering; Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering; Professor, Occupational and Environmental Health; and Co-Director, Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research; The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, USA.

Professor Schnoor is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (elected in 1999) for his pioneering work using mathematical models in science policy decisions. He testified several times before Congress on the environmental effects of acid deposition and the importance of passing the 1990 Clean Air Act. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Science and Technology, the leading journal in both environmental engineering and environmental science. He chaired the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development from 2000-2004. Currently, Jerry is a Co-Director for the National Science Foundation Project Office on a WATer and Environmental Research Systems (WATERS) Network, a $250 million proposal to construct a national environmental observatory network for the sensing, modeling, and forecasting of environmental contaminants beginning in 2011.

Jerry Schnoor and his students have pioneered phytoremediation, the use of plants to help clean the environment. The research involves discovering novel pathways for the uptake, storage, and metabolism of toxic organic chemicals at waste sites. Schnoor has been instrumental in the full-scale clean-up and demonstration of phytoremediation systems to remediate petrochemical contaminations, RDX explosives remediation from groundwater using created wetlands, and the interception and treatment of groundwater plumes containing MTBE and TCE. Schnoor’s publications cover a wide range of environmental problems including toxic chemical fate and transport, surface and groundwater contaminant modeling, phytoremediation, and carbon sequestration for mitigation of greenhouse gases. Jerry has developed a new course at the University of Iowa on sustainable systems and has worked closely with students in Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW).

The conference is now accepting panelist applications from graduate and undergraduate students. For an application, visit drexel.edu/international.

Fuel for Finals
Sponsored by The Energy Club
The Energy Club will present a "fuel for finals" event on Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Atrium, Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
The award-winning BBC documentary, A Crude Awakening, will be screened beginning at 4 p.m. The documentary tells the story of how our civilization’s addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology. Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled.
Informative posters will be on display that highlight the similarities between sources of "human fuel," such as snacks, coffee and energy drinks and other types of fuel, such as petroleum, coal and renewable energy. This event will provide an opportunity for energy-minded members of the University community to meet and discuss these issues with interested colleagues, while enjoying complimentary refreshments.
The event is open to students, faculty and staff.

Governor Richardson, recently re-elected to a second term as Governor of New Mexico, has one of the most distinguished records as a public servant. Having served in Congress for 15 years in diplomatic and leadership roles, he developed a profile as the nation's “go-to guy” when delicate negotiations with Iraq, Cuba, Sudan and North Korea required face-to-face encounters. Speaking five languages, he has been a key player in multiple hostage releases in hot spots around the globe, earning him four nominations for the Nobel Peace prize. The son of a Mexican immigrant and a California physician, he was appointed Secretary to the United Nations by President Clinton. As Secretary of Energy, he laid the foundation for an aggressive strategy to move our nation away from dependency on foreign oil, toward renewable energy sources, and securing our national laboratories. He understands, and will speak to, the significance of oil and energy, in economic, diplomatic, and strategic terms. He regards energy, its uses, its sources, and its stability as a cornerstone toward building the future and security of our country and the world.
