“A World Without Borders”— Snapshot Challenge

Take the Snapshot Challenge and picture yourself a winner!
It’s easy to enter! Simply e-mail your photos to Diana Mihaylova and provide a brief description of each photo. The snapshots will be exhibited from April 14th to April 18th at the Creese Lobby Display Case for everybody to admire and vote for. Do not forget that the deadline for photo submissions is Friday, April 11th! It is your time to shine and win amazing prizes! The three snapshots with most votes will be exhibited at the newly renovated Greenawalt Student Development Center starting Fall of 2008. And that’s not all!

MONDAY, APRIL 14

World Fusion Fest Kick-Off
Great Court, Main Building 4-6pm. Co-Sponsored by Student Life and USGA
We’re starting off the week with tons of free food, music, and prizes! This event will host James R. Tucker, Senior Vice President of Student Life and Administrative Services; Dr. Mark Greenberg, Dean of the Pennoni Honors College; and Philip Poczik, Program Director for the Center of Civic Engagement who will share some stories on the importance of understanding culture around the world. The kickoff will also feature some great world music and tons of international cuisine. All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend this exciting new tradition. Free Salsa Dance Class

Interfaith Panel Discussion: A World Without Borders
Living Arts Lounge, 12-1:30pm. Co-sponsored by Islamic Society and Multicultural Programs
In today’s ever-globalizing world, one’s culture may not be traditionally associated with one’s religion. The intimate but complex relationship of religion and culture plays an increasing role in government policy and public opinion. This discussion will bring together representatives of the Baha’i, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jewish and other faiths to explore this issue and move towards a clearer understanding of its global influence.

International Poetry Readings and Storytelling

CEO Presentation: Intercultural Communication
MacAlister Hall Room 2020, 5-6pm. Presented by Adrienne Kekeç, Executive Director of International Students and Scholars Services
Communication among people of differing cultures can be confusing, difficult and problematic. Non-verbal cues are often the source of miscommunication. Learn a basic overview of cross-cultural communication and obtain strategies from effective communication with people of other cultures. For details contact CEO Programs.

International Coffee Hour and Movie: “Cinema Paradiso” (Italy)
Behrakis Grand Hall, South End, 5:30-8:30pm. Facilitator: Dr. Daniela DePau. Sponsored by ISO
Winner of the 1989 Cannes Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize and the 1989 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, Cinema Paradiso is a comedic yet touching Italian film that tells the story of a famous film director who returns home to Sicily for the first time in almost 30 years. He reminisces about his childhood at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first brought about his love of films. Drexel Italian Professor Daniella DePau will talk about the significance of the film and lead a group discussion following the movie. In addition, the Italian Student Organization will be hosting a bake sale outside of Grand Hall throughout the screening. For details contact Megan Kohr.

How about enjoying a international night a la Greek? The Hellenic Society and OPPA organization will serve Greek Coffee and right after you can watch the beautiful movie, “A Touch of Spice,” which is a dramatic but yet touching Greek film about a young Greek boy (Fanis) growing up in Istanbul, whose grandfather, a culinary philosopher and mentor, teaches him that both food and life require a little salt to give them flavor; they both require…A Touch of Spice. Fanis grows up to become an excellent cook and uses his cooking skills to spice up the lives of those around him. 35 years later he leaves Athens and travels back to his birthplace of Istanbul to reunite with his grandfather and his first love; he travels back only to realize that he forgot to put a little bit of spice in his own life. Drexel Professor and Director of Greek Studies Dr. Maria Hnaraki will talk about the significance of the film and lead a group discussion following the movie. “How to Eat Like a Millionaire” International Food Festival

International movie: “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama” (Documentary)
University Club, MacAlister Hall, 6th floor 5:30-8:30pm. Facilitator: the Venerable Lama Losang Samten. Co-sponsored by VSA and Interfaith Council
An award-winning documentary that poses a montage of challenging questions to the Dalai Lama about topics from society and tradition, to violence and poverty. Filmmaker, Rick Ray, also examines some of the fundamental questions of our time through breathtaking views of India and the Middle East’s spiritual pasts as well as commentary from the Dalai Lama. After the screening for an informal discussion with our host, the Venerable Lama Losang Samten, a renowned Tibetan scholar, spiritual teacher and artist. Losang became a Buddhist monk at the age of 11. He later joined the Namgyal Monastery, becoming a personal attendant to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. Since coming to the US in 1988, Losang has founded several Tibetan Buddhist Centers. In 1995, Samten gave back his monastic vows and became a lay practitioner. For details contact Megan Kohr.

International Movie “Bride and Prejudice” (India)
University Club, MacAlister Hall, 6th floor, 12-2:30pm. Facilitator: Professor Dr. Paula Cohen. Sponsored by VOICE.
Jane Austen’s classic tale of Ms. Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy gets a Bollywood update by director Gurinder Chadha. Bride and Prejudice tells the tale of the Bakshis and their mother’s incessant goal in marrying off her four daughters. When two rich single men, Balraj and Darcy come in to town the Bakshis have high hopes, though circumstance and boorish opinions threaten to get in the way of romance. For details contact Megan Kohr.

Save Darfur

Learn about the human rights crisis in Darfur and explore the diverse and rich culture of the country of Sudan.
Hear Dr. Abdelgabr Adam, president of the Darfur Human Rights Organization of the USA; speak about the human rights crisis in Darfur, Sudan. “Nasha: A Cultural Showcase”
Main Auditorium and Great Court, Main Building, 6pm. Sponsored by DISHA and in association with Pragathi and Indian Graduate Student Association
From the saffron fields of the north to the rice paddies of the south; the golden sands of the west to the mighty mountains in the east; India is a land of rhythm, mirth, melody and magical dances. “Nasha” takes you on a whirlwind tour of Indian culture through songs and dances that inhabit the entire rugged Indian terrain. From folk dances to classical music, western fusion to Bollywood grooves, it is a night that glorifies the enigma of India. Performed by students of Drexel University and professional dance teams from the universities in this area. Featuring Drexel Dhoom, Drexel Adaa, Penn Raas-Gulas, Penn Dhamaka and many other notable dance groups. Hop on the bandwagon and join the celebrations! For details contact Shounak Sengupta

Pistis Orphanage Community Project by ΑΦΩ
Hill Conference Room, Pearlstein Business Learning Center, 12-2pm. Co-sponsored by Zeta Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, Pennoni Honors College, and Center for Civic Engagement
The Pistis Academy and Orphanage in Nakuru, Kenya is a not-for-profit organization that has for the last ten years housed and educated the street children of Kenya. The Zeta Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega sponsors a service project to help to better the lives and lift the spirits of the 200 children at Pistis. The event is consisted by a letter writing session for students here to reach out and give words of encouragement to these children. Come and write to these students and offer kind words and support; supplies (paper, pens, arts and crafts materials, envelopes, etc) will be available for Drexel students.
