University Hearing Board Format

  1. Explain that the hearing is recorded in event of an appeal
  2. Introduction of all parties including witnesses and advisors
    • Witnesses are excused
  3. Remind all parties about privacy of conduct proceedings
  4. Ask if accuser challenges the objectivity of any Board member(s)
  5. Ask if accused challenges the objectivity of any Board member(s)
  6. Read statement of truth to both parties
    • Do you swear or affirm that the testimony you are about to give is true?
    • Do you understand that giving false testimony in a conduct hearing could subject you to disciplinary action?
  7. The Chair (student) states the charge(s)
  8. Ask the accuser to proceed with presentation of case
  9. Allow for questions of the accuser
    • Accuser will receive questions from the Board
    • Accuser will receive questions from accused
    • Witnesses may be called and questioned by the accuser, accused, and the board
  10. Depending upon the length of the hearing, the Chair may call a brief recess in the hearing
  11. Ask the accused to proceed with presentation of case
  12. Allow for questions of the accused
    • Accused will receive questions from the Board
    • Accused will receive questions from accuser
    • Witnesses may be called and questioned by the accused, accuser, and the board
  13. Closing statement by the accuser (2 minutes)
  14. Closing statement by the accused (2 minutes)
  15. Ask the board if anyone has any final questions
  16. Adjourn hearing and inform the parties they will be notified of the Board’s decision within two weeks
