Veterans Information Session During Transfer Orientation

Story Touring: Looking at History, Documenting Experience
A series of five workshops in which student veterans will document their experience and respond to historic documents, letters and journals from the Rosenbach Museum & Library
We will creatively address such questions as:
How do you want your experience to be documented and remembered?
How is your military experience similar or different from the veterans of the past?
How can we make a museum exhibition about the myriad of contemporary and historical veteran experiences relevant and honest?
These workshops will be led by teaching artist and history enthusiast Alex Torra. The content generated during the workshop will be part of an exhibition and public programs at the Rosenbach Museum & Library starting in November 2012.

Memorial Day Primer & Tribute to Drexel's Fallen
Thursday, May 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Please join Drexel's Army ROTC, the Drexel Veterans Association, and the Veterans Task Force for a day of remembrance and appreciation for members of our nation's military who have served or are currently serving.
All members of the Drexel community are invited to attend any or all of the following events:
- 10:00 a.m.: USO's "Christmas in July" program – Help the USO assemble care packages on
the drill floor of the Armory.
- 11:30 a.m.: Picnic lunch and card-writing campaign for soldiers
- 12:00 p.m.: Ceremonial tribute entitled, "A Patriotic Primer on Memorial Day" – The University community will gather to remember Lt. Christopher Mosko, a 2007 graduate of Drexel University who recently lost his life in Afghanistan. The tribute will include music, reflections, original works of poetry, the presentation of the first Chuck Sabin Army ROTC Award, and other contributions that are sure to help make
Memorial Day more meaningful.

Business Plan "Pitch" Competition, a Greater Philadelphia Veterans Network Entrepreneurship Event
Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The event is similar to the TV show "Shark Tank", where aspiring Veteran Entrepreneurs will get to "pitch" their business plan to a panel of local Veteran CEOs and public audience. A monetary prize is offered to the winning "pitch." Networking before and after event. Light fare will be provided.

Drexel Wrestling Honors Veterans: Will You Join the Team on the Bench?

The Department of Athletics and the Drexel Veterans Association will honor veterans at Drexel's upcoming match against the U.S. Military Academy and are looking for up to 20 veterans to sit on the team bench and be announced with the team. The Drexel ROTC will send their color guard and host a social with our special guests in the President's Suite during the match.

The Battle Continues: Combating Homelessness among Military Veterans

Social Justice Week 2012, a week of events showcasing social justice issues presents, "The Battle Continues: Combating Homelessness among Military Veterans" with Cara Colantuono of Support Homeless Veterans, Inc. and U.S. veterans, offering a discussion on the risk factors, statistics, and interventions currently provided to homeless veterans in this country. Live testimonials from homeless veterans will provide a real life understanding about this social epidemic. Support Homeless Veterans, Inc. will provide information on the organization's mission and offer opportunities for community members to get involved in the cause.
Drexel University Veterans Lounge Opening and Dedication

The Drexel community is invited to a special opening and dedication as a way to salute our nation's veterans and celebrate Drexel's commitment to today's student-veterans. All opening ceremony attendees will receive a commemorative 11-11-11 Dragon Dog Tags, presented by Drexel ROTC cadets.
Following the opening, attendees are invited to experience the 103rd Engineer Battalion, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, known as the "Dandy First," through the museum housed in the Armory annex (connected to the Drill Hall/Buckley Courts by a corridor).
Drexel's Veterans Task Force has planned a number of different activities and events for the University community to show their support of our nation's veterans. For detailed information, please refer to "Celebrating Our Veterans in 2011" in DrexelNow.
Veterans Who Earned The Dragon Heart Photo Exhibit

In an effort to raise awareness about military service and those who have served in the Drexel community, the Veterans Task Force at Drexel invited the entire Drexel community to contribute to a photo display honoring veterans they admired and respected. Photographs of "favorite vets" were received by Rebecca L. Weidensaul, associate dean of students, via email during the last two weeks of October for display in the Creese Case (at the entrance to the Café).
Score for Humanity with Drexel Women's Hoops

The Drexel Green Sustainability Council has partnered with Drexel Athletics and other community partners, including the Veterans Task Force, for a special event on Friday, November 11 when the Dragons open the Women's National Invitational Tournament. The organizations will hold a clothing drive from 5-7 p.m., and collect new and used clothing and shoes at the DAC north gym entrance. To support our veterans we will donate all salvageable men's items to a Veteran's Group in the Powelton neighborhood. The rest will be donated to other charitable organizations or will be recycled. Then stay for the game at 7 p.m. and support the Drexel Dragons. For more information regarding the clothing collection, email sustainability@drexel.edu.
Dragon Drive Contributions to Support Veterans
The Veterans Task Force, with the help of Drexel's Human Resources, identified opportunities for Drexel employees to contribute to veteran support agencies during Dragon Drive, the annual employee giving campaign a Drexel during the month of October. One of the organizations was The Veterans Group, which is located in Drexel's immediate community. Additional charities included the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center and the Pennsylvania Veterans Assistance Fund, Inc. Dragon's Salute to Service
Visit the James E. Marks Intercultural Center (33rd and Chestnut Streets) during the month of July for a special exhibit entitled, "Art & Artifacts." The gallery features "Freedom's on Me," the work of renowned multimedia illustrator and U.S. Army Corporal Poto Leifi. Also on display, "A Snap Shot of Drexel's Veterans," depicts an archival history of veterans on campus.

A Healthier U: Meet Joe Singleton
Drexel's A Healthier U program will host Joseph Singleton, Paralympian, world-champion weightlifter, professional martial artist, college graduate, speaker, presenter, and advocate of people with disabilities. As a single man confined to a wheelchair and with many obstacles and barriers in his way, Singleton overcame many health setbacks by being emotionally and physically strong. He will share his story, including his childhood in the Washington, D.C. ghetto, his time in reform school, his military career and the accident that would change his life forever. Hear Singleton's story of determination and why he chose not to let his disabilities deter him from leading a productive life.

University Housing Clothing Drive
University Housing will collect clothing donations from students as they move out of the residence halls this June. These donations will be given to local charities, including the Veteran's Group, located in Powelton Village.
Collection boxes will be placed in each residence hall lobby. Students will receive detailed instructions on how to donate when the Closing Notices go out to all residential students.

Memorial Day Observation Ceremony
Join the Drexel Veterans Task Force on Monday, May 30, 2011 at noon for a Memorial Day observation ceremony at the Armory (33rd and Cuthbert Streets).
Following the noon ceremony at the Armory, there will be a picnic at Buckley Green and Volleyball Courts (33rd and Arch Streets). Residents from the Veterans Group in Powelton Village will join the Drexel community as honored guests and partners in future collaborations. For those unable to attend, join the community in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day.
DU Remembers...Will You?
Beginning in May and during the upcoming months, the Veterans Task Force invites you to show support for our United States service men and women who are students, faculty, and professional staff by wearing a "DU Remembers …Will You?" wristband or wearing red, white and/or blue on Fridays. Wearing the wristband can spark conversation and contribute to a culture of respect and support for our soldiers on campus and in our lives. Take time to inquire more about friends, family and campus members who have served — ask the questions and discover their stories.
The "DU Remembers…Will You?" campaign officially begins with a special Memorial Day Observation. In months to follow, there will be additional events that focus on service and veterans at Drexel.

The evening begins with a reception, where guests can mingle and enjoy hors d'oeuvres, followed by a film screening of The Men, the 1950 movie about a paralyzed war veteran trying to adjust to the world without the use of his limbs. The film stars Marlon Brando in his first movie role.
Immediately after the screening, a panel will discuss the film and answer audience questions. The panelists include:
