Evening College
School of Education Evening B.S. in Education Program
The School of Education has a part-time B.S. in Education program offered in the evening for those who have a job or other commitments during regular business hours. The program is designed primarily to prepare 21st century educators for pre-kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school teaching positions. The degree, however, also serves as a foundation for a myriad of other career opportunities including educational gaming and software development, instructional design and corporate training for businesses and corporations, and college/university administration, in addition to providing a strong foundational underpinning for graduate school.
Part-time evening students who can arrange to and successfully participate in extensive school-based field experiences during the regular school day including 150 hours of in-school pre-student teaching activities and observations to occur during the regular school day and a full-time, 5 day a week, 12-week student teaching experience may also include the course work needed to be recommended for a PA Instructional I Teaching Certificate upon graduation.
Part-time evening students who cannot arrange the time to participate in the extensive school-based field experiences during the regular school day will not be recommended for a teaching certificate upon completion of the students' program of study. These students will enroll in a Non-Field Experience version of the Professional Studies in Instruction course. Professional Electives in lieu of Student Teaching will be selected in consultation with the students' program advisor. It is noted that several courses in the non-teacher certification track of the program require some level of in-school observations, although much less intensive than the time commitment required for the Pre-Student and Student Teaching field experiences taken by those students pursuing teacher certification.
