M.S. in Mathematics Learning and Teaching
Concentration in Mathematics Leadership and Coaching
The three-course concentration in Mathematics Leadership and Coaching enables current mathematics teachers to play key roles in local instructional improvement efforts and prepares teachers to support continued content-focused professional development and enhanced mathematics instruction and student learning throughout their school.
After teachers enhance their own content knowledge, additional online coursework develops their understanding and expertise of the structure, skills, core concepts, facts, methods of inquiry and application of technology required to build and sustain successful coaching practices. Fieldwork then provides the opportunity to engage in a wide range of practical experiences in authentic educational settings.
Concentration for Experienced Educators
Teachers wishing to add this concentration to the M.S. in Mathematics Learning and Teaching should:
- Have at least three years of successful mathematics teaching experience
- Be certified in early childhood or elementary education or middle school or secondary mathematics
Additional Benefits of Completing the Concentration
The concentration is designed to prepare graduates to apply for state-approved endorsement/certification in Mathematics Leadership and Coaching.
The concentration is geared to those who seek non-supervisory leadership roles in schools, such as such as team leader, coach, peer coach, new teacher mentor, curriculum developer and inquiry team member.
Those applicants who aspire to school leadership roles as principal, assistant principal or department chair should consider the M.S. in Educational Administration.
