Certificate Program for Mathematics Teachers
This Drexel University credential enables current mathematics teachers to play key roles in local instructional improvement efforts and prepares teachers to support continued content-focused professional development and enhanced mathematics instruction and student learning throughout their school.
The program is also designed to prepare graduates to apply for state-approved endorsement/certification in Mathematics Leadership and Coaching.
The program is geared to those who seek non-supervisory leadership roles in schools, such as such as team leader, coach, peer coach, new teacher mentor, curriculum developer and inquiry team member.
Those applicants who aspire to school leadership roles as principal, assistant principal or department chair should consider the M.S. in Educational Administration.
Collaboration in Learning
The program includes opportunities for teachers to independently and collaboratively unpack and reconceptualize mathematics in the areas of number sense and numerical operations, geometry and measurement, algebra, data analysis and probability, functions and calculus.
The faculty provide instruction the same way they want the teachers to teach their students. The emphasis is on the learning process rather than the final product. Specific skills that are key to classroom success – asking good questions, using precise, accurate, powerful language and representations, understanding and building on student thinking and giving good feedback – are modeled and practiced.
After teachers enhance their own content knowledge, additional online coursework develops their understanding and expertise of the structure, skills, core concepts, facts, methods of inquiry and application of technology required to build and sustain successful coaching practices working with their colleagues. Fieldwork then provides the opportunity to engage in a wide range of practical experiences in authentic educational settings.
The certificate consists of seven courses and 20 credits that prepare current mathematics teachers to be able to strengthen their colleagues’ understanding of mathematics content.
The Certificate in Mathematics Leadership and Coaching curriculum and course descriptions may be found in the Drexel Online Course Catalog.
