Mario The Dragon Mascot Mania
During Blue & Gold Days Alumni Weekend 2009, more than 20 student organizations, departments, and friends of Drexel participated in the University’s first Mario Mania. Excitement started to fill the air as the 4-foot tall models of the Drexel mascot decorated by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Drexel started to appear in the Great Court of the Main Building.
On Friday, May 1, 2009, the University community was invited to vote for the “Best” dragon as they were put on display in the Quad under a big tent. Even the on and off rain couldn’t keep the more than 1,100 votes from being casted to award the top three winners a cash-prize. Throughout Alumni Weekend, the decorated dragons were able to be purchased through a silent auction to raise fund for student scholarships.
Two departments and one student organization claimed prizes for “Best” dragon. The “Best” dragon went to first place design “I.T. Nerd” submitted by the Department of Information Resources and Technology. Receiving second and third places by the number of votes casted were “Miss Drexel” submitted by Office of Business and Finance for Student Life & Administrative Services, and “South Street Mario” designed by Women’s Varsity Softball Team.
