Joseph Campbell joined Drexel University in June 2000, shortly after serving as North Carolina State University's Chief Operations Officer for the 1999 Special Olympics World Games.
Campbell brings nearly 30 years of experience in higher education administration, with a bachelor's degree in psychology and economics, a master's degree in student personnel counseling in higher education and a doctorate degree in higher education administration.
Before being named to lead University Procurement in 2003, Campbell served three years as Drexel's Director of Residential Living. During that time he was an adjunct faculty member and partnered with the Pennoni Honors College to form the Honors Residence Hall program. He also initiated the development of residential based learning communities with the College of Engineering, the LeBow College of Business, Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and the College of Information Science and Technology (The iSchool at Drexel).
Under Campbell’s leadership from 2003 to July 2013, University Procurement streamlined operations and became more efficient, reducing end-to-end transaction processing costs through an expanded PCard program that dramatically reduced the number of purchase order transactions. In addition, he increased partnerships with strategic suppliers and group purchasing organizations and improved the processes for bidding and awarding construction, third-party development and HR benefits contracts. Campbell also initiated University Procurement’s Supplier Diversity Development Initiative and Sustainable Purchasing Initiative.
In 2011, Campbell was named Senior Associate Vice President for Administrative Operations with the responsibilities of leading strategic initiatives critical to the success of the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services and Drexel University. As Senior Associate Vice President, he oversees and manages the planning, design and prioritization of business initiatives, procuring major University construction and capital projects, critical issues management, sustainability operations and the development and proper monitoring of Student Life and Administrative Services’ departmental goals.
Campbell has served as chair of the Drexel University NCAA Athletic Certification Steering Committee, as well as the Philadelphia Area Collegiate Cooperative group purchasing organization. He is currently a member of the Drexel University Intercultural Engagement and Diversity Initiative Steering Committee and active in Drexel's environmental sustainability initiative, Drexel Green.
Before coming to Drexel University, Campbell worked for the University of Georgia, University of Miami, Appalachian State University, Radford University and North Carolina State University.
