Rules and Regulations for Program Initiation, Review, Change, and Termination (cont'd)

(adopted by Board of Trustees of Drexel University, 7 May 1991)

VI. Guidelines for Periodic Review of an Existing Program

A. Periodic Review: Requirement and Schedule

1. Every academic program will normally be subject to a periodic review on a five year schedule.

2. The VPAA, in cooperation with the SCAA, will prepare and revise annually (if necessary) a Review Calendar for the ensuing seven year period.

3. The VPAA will budget funds necessary to accomplish the reviews.

B. The Proposal

1. Upon notification by the office of the VPAA of the time for review, the Director and/or one or more faculty members of a program, or one or more academic administrators, will write/sponsor a proposal for continuation of an academic program. This proposal shall be responsive to the criteria in Section VII and shall contain all pertinent information to permit substantive review of a current program.

2. The SCAA shall receive the written proposal.

The proposal shall have been evaluated by the faculty and the academic unit head responsible for the operation of the program as well as the appropriate dean or deans together with the unit's curriculum committee or faculty.

Proposals and pertinent documents will be kept filed in the office of the Senate and be open to review.

C. The Preliminary Review (See Section IX)

D. The Formal Review (See Section X)

E. The Report and Senate Action (See Section XI)

F. Courses of Further Action

The VPAA will render a final statement regarding continuance of the program.

1. The proposal will be approved if both the VPAA and the Senate concur that it meets the following requirements:

a. the program is appropriate to the University's goals and priorities;
b. the program is academically excellent and necessary;
c. the program is fiscally sound.

2. If a proposal for program continuance is not accepted, the VPAA will order a statement for termination of the program to be prepared. The records of the program review will constitute the principal basis for the termination review, but any interested party may provide new material relevant to a review.

3. If the recommendation is for termination, the VPAA will order the subsequent review to be carried out in conformance with the Rules and Regulations for Program Termination.

4. If the recommendation is for modification, the VPAA may order the subsequent review to be carried out in conformance with the Rules and Regulations for Program Change. If this ensuing proposal for Program Change is disapproved, the VPAA will order a subsequent review for termination to be carried out in conformance with the Rules and Regulations for Program Termination.

5. A written full statement of the reasons for the action taken will be made jointly by the VPAA and the SCAA.
