Advanced Classes

Learn the tricks to climbing harder than the average climber, to push top grade, or simply to understand what the pros know. Prerequisite: 1 year climbing experience, Belay certification, and ability to climb V2 comfortably. Equipment is provided.

What you will learn:

  • How to safely spot a climber when bouldering. It's a team sport.
  • Advanced footwork including drop knee, heel hooking, and more.
  • Advanced hand positions.
  • Visualization and working the crux of a climbing sequence.
  • Visualization of a climbing sequence.
  • Strength training principles to improve power and endurance.

Indoor Lead Climbing Course:

Two-week course – 2 hour class/ One day a week/ 2 weeks - Maximum of 4

Tie into the sharp end and learn to safely and efficiently lead an indoor sport climb. Transition from learning techniques with the safety of a top rope (aka mock leading). Complete a first lead climb.

This course will be taught by an AMGA (American Mountain Guides Association) or PCIA (Professional Climbing Instructors' Association) certified climbing instructor. At the end of the course members will have the necessary skills to complete the lead climbing certification at Drexel. Prerequisite: 1 year climbing experience, Belay certification, and ability to climb 5.8 comfortably. Equipment is provided.

What you will learn:

  • How to belay a lead climber with both an ATC and Gri Gri.
  • Techniques for safe clipping.
  • Evaluating fall forces and minimizing risk.
  • Building a 2 bolt sport anchor.
  • Catching a lead fall.
