Pilates
The Drexel Recreation Center not only offers structured mat Pilates classes as part of the group exercise schedule, but we also have customizable private Pilates sessions available in one, three, and six sessions. Meet with a Pilates apprentice for coaching on one or many of the apparatuses, including tower, high chair, high barrel, and/or reformer.
The Pilates method of exercise and movement is designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. With systematic practice of specific choreographed exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable not only as a fitness endeavor, but also as an important adjunct to professional sports training, dance, and physical rehabilitation of all kinds. Based on the work of Joseph Pilates, this work can be done on both specifically designed apparatus as well as in mat class form. Once called contrology, the system is built on the principle of uniform development of the musculature with a focus on concentration, centering, strength, precision, breath and flow.
Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits. Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing is a primary focus. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination - both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all heartily increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one's life.
