Project SOS: Enrollment Information
Skype for OCD Study (Project S.O.S.)
Update: Enrollment in this study is currently closed. It is possible that we may re-open enrollment at a later date. If you would like to be contacted if/when enrollment re-opens, please email us at drexel.sos@gmail.com. Please put "SOS Waitlist" as the email subject, and your email address in the body.
If you are an adult with obsessive compulsive disorder and reside in the following states you may be eligible: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Maryland, Washington DC, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Texas, South Dakota, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin. (Please note: This list of states may be expanding, so interested participants should contact us or periodically check our website for updates.)
Once you have expressed interest in the study and spoken to a member of our clinical team, there are a few steps you will need to complete.
1) Download and install the Skype application. Instructions are here:
2) Sign the Consent Form. First download the Information Sheet (PDF). Then download and print the Consent Form (PDF). Initial the upper right corner of each page. Sign the last page. Fax or mail the consent form to our office. Fax is preferred.
3) Eligibility Meeting. Participate in a 2 - 2.5 hour telephone meeting with a staff member to determine if this program is the right match for you. During this this meeting, we will ask you questions about different areas of your life. If we think this treatment program will be helpful to you, we will invite you to enroll. If you decide to enroll you will be randomly assigned to one of two treatments (similar to flipping a coin). Both treatments include exposure and ritual prevention and are real, active, gold-standard treatment packages for OCD. There is no "placebo" or fake treatment used in this study.
4) Test Skype. To participate in our online treatment, you must be able to have videoconferencing conversations with us through Skype. You will meet with a staff member to test your computer's ability to videoconference with us.

If you participate in this study, you will have to purchase a web camera if you don't already have one. You can purchase a web camera through the Skype website (http://shop.skype.com/webcams/). Built-in web cameras and web cameras purchased from other vendors (e.g., Amazon) may also be suitable.
We will then test Skype videoconferencing on your computer. Note: After you test your Skype connection with one of our staff members, you may or may not be asked to purchase a headset in order to improve sound quality. Also, there is a chance that Skype will not work properly for you; if this is the case, you will not be able to receive treatment, and we will not be able to reimburse you for the technical equipment you decided to purchase. It is your decision as to whether you are willing to take this risk. If you are unwilling to take this risk, we recommend that you do not purchase any additional technical equipment or enroll in this study.
Please do not purchase any additional technical equipment until you know whether you are eligible for this study.
