Faculty Research Updates

Dr. Rosina Weber (Associate Professor) and Professor Julie Mostov (Vice Provost for Global Initiatives) attended the Partnership21 Conference, an event organized by the Government of Brazil. The event, entitled "Brazil-U.S.: Partnership for the 21st Century," focused on educational and business perspectives of this partnership, with presentations by members from American and Brazilian government and educational institutions (including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Dilma Rousseff from Brazil).

On April 12, 2012, Dr. Lisl Zach (Assistant Professor) served on the panel at The College of New Jersey commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic (which occurred on April 15, 1912). The panel, titled “Innovations in Crisis Communication: Lessons from Titanic, Multiple Disasters, and the Shootings at Virginia Tech,” featured panelists renowned for their expertise in crisis communication. Dr. Zach spoke on the topic of crisis communication, entitled “Communication in the Wake of Disasters: Making Sense of Chaos.”

Dr. Chaomei Chen (Associate Professor) published the paper, “Emerging trends in regenerative medicine: a scientometric analysis in CiteSpace,” which reviews regenerative medicine. The paper was published in the medical journal Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy — an especially notable achievement because the medical discipline is usually far removed from the computer and information science disciplines that are the iSchool’s focus.

On March 8, 2012, Dr. Aleksandra Sarcevic (Assistant Professor) was invited to deliver a talk entitled “Improving the care of the injured child in emergency department through information technology,” at the Healthcare Informatics Colloquium Series held at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Il-Yeol Song’s (Professor) paper entitled "RASIM: A Rank-Aware Separate Index Method for Answering Top-k Spatial Keyword Queries” was accepted to be published in World Wide Web (WWW) Journal. The paper was co-authored with his colleagues of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Dr. Hyuk-Yoon Kwon (a post-doc at KAIST), Dr. Kyu-Young Whang (distinguished professor of KAIST), and Dr. Haisun Wang (senior researcher at Microsoft Research Asia).
