TUITION EXCHANGE PROGRAM POLICY
DREXEL FACULTY WITH DEPENDENTS WISHING TO ATTEND A TUITION EXCHANGE INSTITUTION
The Tuition Exchange is a national scholarship exchange program for eligible dependent children of employees, with members from approximately 580 U.S. colleges and universities. Drexel will award up to five awards to dependent children From Tuition Exchange Institutions wishing to attend Drexel.
The Tuition Exchange Program is administered by the Office of the Provost and is coordinated with the Office of Enrollment Management to balance imports and exports.
The Drexel Tuition Exchange Program Liaison Officer is Dr. N. John DiNardo, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
POLICY & APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR DREXEL FACULTY
The Drexel University Tuition Exchange Program provides eligible dependent children of eligible Drexel University faculty members with the ability to swap access to scholarships with participating Tuition Exchange Program institutions. Due to the limited number of Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarships each academic year (not to exceed five), not all Drexel Tuition Exchange Program applications will result in certification to apply for a Tuition Exchange Program award at an exchange institution.
Drexel Tuition Exchange scholarships to participating Tuition Exchange Program institutions may cover full tuition at a four-year undergraduate program. At a minimum, for students that will enter a college or university in Fall 2009, institutions with tuition greater than $29,000 may award less than full tuition but not less than $29,000. Any difference between the Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship and actual tuition, plus costs for room and board and any other fees, must be paid by the student's family or covered by other sources, if eligible and available. For each eligible student, Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship awards will not exceed a maximum of eight (8) semester units or the completion of the baccalaureate degree, which ever comes first.
Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarships are not given for graduate or professional study, non-degree study, study abroad or work toward a second undergraduate degree. Summer session programs are also excluded from this scholarship. Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship recipients must remain in good personal, academic and financial standing with the institutions they are attending. If the recipient does not meet these standards, then the Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship will be withdrawn.
ELIGIBILITY FOR DREXEL FACULTY / DEPENDENTS
To qualify for the Tuition Exchange Program Scholarship award from Drexel University, a student:
- must qualify as a dependent (eligible children are children born to the University faculty member, adopted by the University faculty member or have the University faculty as legal guardian prior to the commencement of the academic year) of a current faculty member who prior to the first day of classes for the term for which Tuition Exchange benefits are sought, is in a tenure track position and has served a minimum of seven years of full-time consecutive employment1 at the University; and
- must be a first-time entering freshman; and
- must have met the established requirements for admission to the participating Tuition Exchange institution; and
- must, once admitted, continue to meet any existing requirements to maintain satisfactory academic progress at the participating Tuition Exchange institution; and
- must not have reached his/her 25th birthday.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR DREXEL FACULTY / DEPENDENTS
The receipt of a Tuition Exchange Program award depends on (1) being admitted to the participating Tuition Exchange Program institution, (2) receiving Tuition Exchange Program certification from Drexel’s Office of the Provost, and (3) being selected for a Tuition Exchange Program award by Drexel.
The student must submit an application for admission to the participating Tuition Exchange Program institution of possible attendance. Admission applications must be completed in accordance with each institution’s admission requirements and procedures. This process occurs the fall prior to the student’s anticipated fall semester of enrollment at a participating exchange institution. For students entering as freshmen in Fall 2009, application must be made in Fall 2008. A list of the participating institutions is found at http://tuitionexchange.org/partinst. Each exchange institution determines its Tuition Exchange Program policies and procedures. The Liaison Officers at the exchange institutions will notify the student that their application has been accepted or rejected for a Tuition Exchange Program award.
In order to be certified to receive Tuition Exchange Program certification, the faculty member/parent of the student must submit a Drexel University Tuition Exchange Program Application to Drexel’s Office of the Provost. Please note, there is a $35 processing fee, made payable to Drexel University, for each eligible student. For students entering another college or university as first-time freshmen in Fall 2009, Drexel University Tuition Exchange Program application must be completed and returned to the Office of the Provost no later than November 10, 2008.
Being certified for the Tuition Exchange Program scholarship award does not qualify a student for admission to a participating Tuition Exchange Program institution, nor does admission to a participating Tuition Exchange Program institution qualify a student for a Tuition Exchange Program scholarship award.
If the number of eligible students for the Tuition Exchange Program scholarship award is equal to or less than the certifications available, all students will be approved for Tuition Exchange Program certification. In the event that more eligible students apply for the program than can be accommodated, the length of Drexel University service by the eligible faculty members will be the factor utilized for certification. Eligible faculty members with the longest continuous full-time service will be certified first to apply for a Tuition Exchange Program scholarship award. If an eligible faculty member presently has one dependent receiving a Tuition Exchange Program scholarship award, additional eligible dependents will be rank ordered below the last eligible applicant until the sibling’s slot becomes available. In the case of multiple faculty members applying who have the same service date, ties will be broken by analysis of need and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (“FASFA”) must be submitted by the concerned parties. The Drexel Office of the Provost will notify eligible faculty/students approved for certification to apply for a Tuition Exchange Program award by November 21 2008.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS
The Tuition Exchange Program scholarships awards are taxable to the faculty member.
In the event a faculty member ceases to be employed by the University, becomes ineligible, or passes away while their child is receiving the Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship, the student will be permitted to complete the academic year but at the conclusion of that academic year, will no longer receive a Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship.
If the faculty member should become ineligible or the student withdraws from the participating Tuition Exchange Program institution while the student is receiving the Drexel Tuition Exchange Program scholarship, the student must immediately inform the Drexel Tuition Exchange Program Liaison Officer.
If both parents and/or guardians are Drexel faculty members, those persons may not combine their years of service. However, each faculty member retains his/her right to independently participate in the Drexel Tuition Exchange Program.
The maximum number of eligible children per faculty member is two.
Recipients for the Tuition Exchange Program scholarship will not be eligible for a grant-in-aid or tuition remission from Drexel University while they hold Tuition Exchange Program scholarships.
RECERTIFICATION
Although the Drexel Tuition Exchange scholarship is given with the intention that the student will hold the award for eight (8) semesters, the student's eligibility must be re-certified by Drexel’s Office of the Provost each academic year. The student must pay an annual $35 processing fee for each re-certification and no later than January 30 of each year, submit the Re-certification and Renewal Form to the Host Institution. The student must also confirm with the Drexel Liaison Officer that the notification has been sent.
Drexel University and the Tuition Exchange Program reserve the right to modify or terminate this program at any time.
