Bridge to the Doctorate Program
The Greater Philadelphia Region Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (Philadelphia AMP) is pleased to announce the upcoming participation of Drexel University in the Bridge to the Doctorate Program.
Drexel University is seeking your assistance to identify applicants for the Bridge to the Doctorate Program slated for launch in Summer 2010. The 2010 cohort of the Bridge to the Doctorate Graduate Fellowship Program represents the eighth phase of the National Science Foundation’s commitment to the participation of under-represented minorities in graduate levels of study in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. Examples of such fields include chemistry, physics, mathematics, life and biological sciences, computer science and engineering.
This fellowship is designed to establish a bridge to the terminal degree – the Ph.D. – by providing students the financial support needed to successfully pursue graduate study; essential mentorship and guidance of participating faculty; and a support network of staff dedicated to the promotion of future leadership in the scientific enterprise. The program aims to encourage students’ interest in graduate study by demystifying the graduate admissions process and removing the financial barriers associated with continued study.
The program broadens perspective among faculty and institutional stakeholders regarding the successful candidate for graduate study by evaluating applicants on the basis of their record of achievements as well as their professional and research experiences, motivation for advanced study, and connection to the field of study.

- Participation in a LSAMP Program as an undergraduate

The program takes into account the importance of relevant role models and mentors – not only in shaping the successful candidate but also in providing support and perspective while he/she pursues graduate study. Current research in the area of student success and retention identifies the key role that faculty like you play in developing and retaining successful students, particularly through research experiences. In recognition of your relationship with the students on your campus and your perspective regarding their potential for success, we request your assistance in identifying students either at the university or in your disciplinary area who are ready to pursue graduate study. We believe the benefits of the Bridge to the Doctorate Program will also encourage interest.
