Provost Office: Memorandum

To: All Faculty, Staff, and Students
From: Stephen W. Director, Provost
Subject: Judith Pitney, Vice Provost for Budget, Planning and Administration
Date: 5 July 2006

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Judith A. Pitney as Vice Provost for Budget, Planning and Administration. This newly created position will have responsibility for overseeing the financial affairs, planning and physical resources for all activities related to the University's academic units. The offices of Academic Budgets, Academic Information Systems and the Registrar will fall under the office of the Vice Provost for Budget, Planning and Administration

Dr. Pitney has had over 35 years experience in both the public and private sectors of higher education. She began her career in the field of government relations and research administration serving in positions at the University of Vermont, George Washington University and SUNY-Binghamton.
While Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at New York University, Judith co-authored a five year strategic development plan for FAS and oversaw spending of a major infusion of endowment and capital resources. She was then appointed Associate Provost at Southern Methodist University to perform a similar master planning role.

After two years as a full-time doctoral student in the Ph.D. Program in Higher Education at the University of Michigan (Ph.D., 1992), she resumed her administrative career as Director of Planning and Administrative Services in the Office of the Vice President for Research at UM. For the past 14 years she has been Executive Director of Resource Planning and Management for UM's College of Engineering. In that capacity she has provided leadership for the College's financial management ($300M operating budget for FY06), administrative information systems and institutional research, facilities planning and management and human resource services.
She has been the College's lead administrator for managing five major capital projects costing $143M.

Judith has co-authored published articles on faculty performance review and activity-based budgeting and has served as a planning consultant for the New York Public Library, Duke University and the University of Notre Dame. Her leadership assignments at the University of Michigan include service on several executive-level search committees, the Internal Controls Advisory Board and the Human Resource Services Advisory Committee.

I worked closely with Judith during my nine years at the University of Michigan and look forward to working with her again in this new role. Her great experience and insight will serve Drexel well.
