Julie Mostov Named Associate Vice Provost for International Programs
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Julie Mostov, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of International Area Studies in the College of Arts and Science, to the new position of Associate Vice Provost for International Programs, effective September 1, 2007.
Recognizing that internationalization or programs and curricula is a major trend in leading universities today, Drexel€s Strategic Plan calls for the creation of a central Office of International Programs to provide Drexel with the infrastructure and coordination necessary to take advantage of opportunities and challenges in this era of globalization. This step reflects concerns with global issues in science and technology, politics, and culture; awareness of the benefits of international learning experiences and research collaborations; and the need to attract international scholars and students to Drexel.
The new office, which Dr. Mostov will lead, will facilitate multidisciplinary international programs across the University, enhance the contributions to international education within the colleges, schools, and other academic units, and increase the global nature of the institution. Dr. Mostov will report to the Provost and work closely with all of the Colleges and Schools to promote college-based programs and cross-collegial collaboration. In assuming this new role, she will step down as Director of International Area Studies.
Dr. Mostov has served on the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences for over two decades, following the receipt of her Ph.D. in Political Science from New York University. She has long been involved with international programs at Drexel as Director of International Area Studies in the College of Arts and Science and chair of the Work Group on International Education. She also was Director of Women's Studies. Her recent publications, including her forthcoming book Soft Borders: Rethinking Sovereignty and Democracy, explore issues of sovereignty and citizenship, the politics of national identity, and gender and sexuality.
In addition to her academic research,
Mostov has designed and directed development projects and U.S. Department of State grants over the past ten years in Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, and Moldova and served as an outside evaluator of grants and international programs for other universities. She is a regular commentator on NPR on events in Southeastern Europe and served on a number of government task forces during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.
