President's Office: Memorandum

To: All Faculty, Staff and Students
From: Constantine Papadakis, Ph.D., President
Subject: Dr. Mark Greenberg Appointed Interim Provost
Date: 16 June 2008

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Greenberg, founding dean of the Pennoni Honors College, as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs effective June 16, 2008. I have appointed Dr. Greenberg to this position following a great deal of consultation and careful deliberation. Dr. Greenberg enjoys the respect and support of colleagues across the University. He is a proven leader whose experience will be uniquely helpful to Drexel.

We are now embarking on the second year of our five-year Strategic Plan, the accrediting year for the Earle Mack School of Law, the beginning of a great experiment in exporting our brand to Sacramento, the realization of inter-collegiate partnerships, and a point of special growth in quality and programs for many of our colleges. All of this is the result of sustained commitment and hard work by faculty, deans, staff and University leadership, who have helped develop a new vision for the University. In his role as interim provost, Dr. Greenberg has the mandate to advance our strategic plan, enhancing the quality of our academic enterprise while ensuring that we continue the great momentum that has been underway.

Dr. Greenberg, who has been part of the Drexel community for 29 years, has an intimate knowledge of the institution on many levels and, through his development of innovative interdisciplinary programs, has aided Drexel's transformation. He has administered honors programs and the Pennoni Honors College for 13 years. He has lead the development and implementation of innovative interdisciplinary academic programs, including building the Honors community in quality and size, and introducing the Drexel Cultural Passport, Visiting Scholars, the Great Works Symposia and the University Writing Program. He established the Center for Civic Engagement and the Study Abroad program, while he provides academic oversight for the Co-op 101 course. Dr. Greenberg also oversees, together with University Relations, "The Drexel InterView" and the online magazine The Smart Set from Drexel University (http://www.thesmartset.com).

During his tenure at Drexel, Dr. Greenberg has also served as interim dean of the School of Education, supervisor of the Drexel-School District of Philadelphia Partnership, and as director of graduate studies in the English Department. Prior to joining Drexel, he taught at the University of Michigan and Saginaw Valley University. He was also a Visiting Professor at Swarthmore College and a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow at Princeton University. His teaching at Drexel has been recognized with the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Dr. Greenberg earned his bachelor's degree from Queens College of the City University of New York and his master's and doctoral degrees in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan. He has published three books and more than 30 articles or chapters in books and delivered more than 80 invited presentations and keynote addresses on 18th and 19th century British literature.

He has chaired the executive committee of the Modern Language Association's Division of Literature and Science, and is a founder and past president of the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts. For years Dr. Greenberg was review editor of Brown University's Modern Language Studies and serves on a number of editorial and executive boards, including those for Johns Hopkins University Press, the University of Michigan Press, Longman's Publishers, McGraw-Hill, and the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics. He has evaluated grants and educational programs for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation and has consulted for the National Film Board of Canada and for the president and provost of The New School.

He has also provided leadership at crucial junctures: bridging periods of transition by serving as acting dean for the School of Education, working closely with four previous Drexel provosts on strategic planning and development, and serving as an ongoing advisor to myself. In short, Dr. Greenberg represents someone who not only knows the University well but who has proven his ability to innovate and to lead.

Please join me in welcoming Mark to this position and supporting him as he helps Drexel University realize its ambitious goals. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Stephen Director for all of his contributions to the University. We wish him great success at Northeastern University.

Sincerely,

Constantine Papadakis, Ph.D.
President
