Provost Office: Memorandum
To: All Faculty and Staff
From: Dr. Stephen Director, Provost
Subject: Allen Sabinson Appointed Dean of Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design
Date: 11 November 2005
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Allen Sabinson as dean of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, subject to approval by the Drexel Board of Trustees. Mr. Sabinson was the unanimous recommendation of the Dean's Search Advisory Committee after a nationwide search.
Mr. Sabinson joined Drexel in January 2004 as the director of the Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies. Prior to joining Drexel, he spent 30 years working in high-level executive positions in programming and production at Miramax, A&E, ABC, TNT, NBC and Showtime.
He has commissioned hundreds of movies, television series, documentaries and reality series. Among the productions he's been responsible for are the Emmy Award-winning Horatio Hornblower films, Sidney Lumet's 100 Centre Street, It's Garry Shandling's Show, Stephen King's It and the Emmy Award-winning miniseries Separate But Equal and The Old Testament.
As senior vice president of programming at A&E, Mr. Sabinson introduced the network to the production of original movies and series. Under his leadership, A&E received more Emmy nominations for two consecutive years than any basic cable network.
While at TNT, he was responsible for the production of Gettysburg and commissioned the Emmy award-winning mini-series The Old Testament. The Hallmark Hall of Fame was brought to ABC and the network's miniseries Separate but Equal won an Emmy during his tenure. He also helped create the Stephen King franchise on ABC and commissioned the Peabody Award-winning Small Sacrifices.
Please join me in congratulating Allen on his appointment.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express deep gratitude to Dr. David Raizman, who has ably served as interim dean of the College since September 2004. Under his leadership, the College has continued to prosper and has seen significant growth in its programs.
