Drexel President to Introduce Newest Look in Campus Security with the Segway Human Transporter
    August 11 , 2003

What: Segway-trained Drexel President Constantine Papadakis will take a Segway Human Transporter out for a spin tomorrow to show off the University's newest addition to its public safety program and provide a glimpse of what's to come on other college campuses.

    The Segway Human Transporter
Papadakis will be joined by Drexel Public Safety staff, who will ride Segways through a test obstacle course. The vehicles will be used to patrol the campus and enforce parking regulations. Segways are the first self-balancing, electric transportation devices.

Drexel's use of the Segway is in the tradition of other technological firsts by the University, including the nation's first wireless campus and the nation's first mobile web portal service for students. Drexel is the first major university in the nation to purchase Segways for public safety.

    When: Tuesday, August 12, 2003, 10:30 - 11 a.m.

Where: Drexel Quadrangle (Between 32nd & 33rd and Market & Chestnut streets)

Visuals: President Papadakis riding the Segway into the Quad while the William Tell Overture plays in the background . Public safety staff members navigating the obstacle course . Papadakis taking a around the Quad as Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild plays.

About the Segway: Introduced as the "It" invention that would revolutionize human transportation, the Segway was invented by Dean Kamen. The Segway can be ridden indoors or outdoors on a variety of terrains at a maximum speed of 12 miles per hour.
