Philadelphia Youth Network Shadowing Day

Shadowing Day is held annually at Drexel University as part of a city-wide program whereby area businesses and organizations welcome ninth grade students from the Philadelphia area public high schools into their workplace for a one day career exploration experience. According to the Philadelphia Youth Network, the dropout rate for public high school students in Philadelphia is close to 50%. The Shadowing Day program, which is an integral component of WorkReady Philadelphia, provides 9th and 10th grade high school students with first-hand exposure to the working world and an understanding of how school is connected to career success.

This mentoring program teaches adolescents the link between the importance/value of staying in high school and attaining higher education/vocation with obtaining a satisfying job opportunity in the future. The mentoring process can spark a student’s curiosity and desire to learn and show students that knowledge and good work habits are the road to personal and professional success.
