Recycling

Recycling is pretty easy in Philadelphia.
It's also the right thing to do.

What can I recycle? recycle

  • Glass bottles and jars: Rinsed out, no lids
  • Aluminum and other metal cans: Rinsed out
  • Paper
  • Empty paint cans: Air dried with no lids
  • Empty Aerosol cans: no lids
  • Mixed paper/Newspaper
  • #1 and #2 plastic containers (University city only ): rinsed
  • Flattened cardboard (University City only)

  • Plastics and cardboard are recycled in single stream areas only

    When is recycling day?
Recycling day is every other week on trash day in most areas. In order to find out when your recycling/trash pickup day is send us an email at offcampushousing@drexel.edu or follow these simple steps:

  • Visit http://citymaps.phila.gov
  • Click on "service areas"
  • Read and agree with the Terms of Use
  • Enter your address and click "find"
  • Select the services that you would like to view, for example "Recycling Day"
  • With that information, you may then view this pdf that details the 2007 Recycling days.

  • What kind of container can I use?
Any sturdy metal or plastic container with the word "Recycling" marked clearly on its side will do.
The container must 20 gallons or less (use multiple containers if you need more than 20 gallons) and are for glass and cans in dual stream areas.
If you would like an "official" recycling bin, you may visit the UCD at 3940 Chestnut street between
the hours of 8:30AM and 5:00PM, or visit one of these locations.

    What is "Mixed Paper"?
Items such as newspaper, magazines, clean food boxes, books, mail - junk and regular, phone directories are some examples of what mixed paper is.

Where can I get more information?

Single stream recycling methods lets you place all of your recyclables into one container.  All of Philadelphia does not utilize single stream recycling.  Students living EAST of the Schuylkill river (University City Campus area) are "single stream". Students living around the Center City or Queen Lane campuses are "dual stream"
Plastics #1 and #2 (look at the bottom of the plastic container) and flattened cardboard may be recycled in single stream areas.

Dual Stream areas can not recycle plastics or cardboard at this time. The "dual stream" refers to having to separate recyclables into two groups. Glass and cans are to be placed inside the recycle bin, while paper products are either placed within a brown paper bag, or tied with twine.
