The granddaughter of civil and labor rights activist Cesar Chavez, human rights activist and diversity speaker Julie Chavez Rodriguez was introduced to the farm worker movement at an early age.  Throughout her life, she has played an active role in the fight for social justice, human rights, and the rights of working people.  Chavez Rodriguez is currently the Programs Director for the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, where she spearheads the National Youth Leadership Initiative, an effort which addresses academic and civic engagement among today’s youth.

In this workshop, Frederico will discuss "Managing Risk in Changing Financial Markets: A Discussion of the Causes of the Economic Meltdown and Lessons Learned; the Implications of Regulatory Reform and the Role of Credit Enhancement to Create Stability and Liquidity."  Frederico has served as president and CEO of Assured Guaranty Ltd. since December 2003.  Prior to this appointment he was chairman of ACE Financial Services, and has supervised the operations of Assured Guaranty since its acquisition by ACE Limited in 1999.  Frederico was employed with ACE for nine years, advancing to increasingly senior positions, including president and CEO, ACE Bermuda; chairman, president and CEO, ACE INA Holdings; and president and chief operating officer, ACE Limited.  He was also vice chairman of ACE Limited, and Chairman of ACE INA, ACE USA and ACE Financial Services and oversaw the successful acquisition and integration of the domestic and international property casualty operations acquired by ACE from CIGNA Corporation in July 1999 and the acquisition of Capital Re Corp., the predecessor company to Assured Guaranty, in December 1999.  Frederico spent 13 years at various subsidiaries of the American International Group.   Frederico, a member of the Drexel University Board of Trustees, received his B.S. Invisible Children Screening and Guest Speakers

This presentation seeks to first, feature Goffman’s Stigma Theory. While stigma theory is an old social theory, it does present common stigma-management strategies that apply to various minority social categories. This part of the presentation will point out societal prejudices and lay out commonalities between racial, gender and sexual minority approaches to avoiding stigma. The objective of this first part of the presentation is for the participants to view common experiences, rather than emphasizing different experiences.  The second part of the presentation seeks to feature Cummins’ Empowerment Theory. While traditionally utilized by language professionals, it is also empowering to utilize this model to expand the breadth of what we see as “multicultural education”. Session participants will leave this session with a clear understanding that the current status of multicultural education is not clear. Participants will learn that looking back to the past can inform our movement toward the future. And most importantly, a common ground to explore difference will be recognized and explored for future analysis.

This event will feature a panel of speakers that will allow student leaders and the Drexel community to see people with HIV/AIDS in a new light.  The speakers are all from different backgrounds and some have HIV/AIDS and will be able to provide a first-hand experience that the Drexel community will be able to benefit from.  This event will allow students to better understand the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and teach them how to properly act around minorities in work or social environments.

Learn valuable leadership skills and strategies from some of American’s most powerful and influential military leaders.  Discover how you can apply their tactics and strategies to your own leadership style!  In Part 1 of this 3 Part Series, you will learn about the styles of Benedict Arnold and George Washington from the Revolutionary War era.  Part 2 will be scheduled in the Winter Term with a focus on the Civil War era (Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee).  The series will conclude with Part 3 in the Spring Term with a focus on the 20th Century Leaders, John Pershing and George Patton.  All history buffs are welcome, too!
