Florida Trail Association

The Florida Trail Association’s (FTA) primary purpose is to develop, maintain, promote, and protect a continuous public hiking trail the length of the state of Florida called the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST) and other side and loop trails.
Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST) is one of eight national scenic trails, the FNST was added to the national trails system in 1983 by the U.S. Congress. The FNST will one day extend 1,400 miles, from Gulf Islands National Seashore in Florida¿s western panhandle to Big Cypress Preserve in south Florida.

We will help the retreat center maintain their 130 acre site. We will work on trail maintenance, gardening, and building repairs. We will also be working with the nearby Cheatham Wildlife Management area, and one day we will also venture into nearby Nashville, Tennessee to help at local soup kitchens.

We will be heading down to the south to work with one of the largest Habitat groups in the south. Along with building houses, we will be exploring the area, and having fun at the local site!
Through the work of Habitat, thousands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem¿decent housing for all. Today, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 200,000 houses, sheltering more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide!

Come join us on our 2nd Collegiate Challenge with Habitat for Humanity. Anderson County, in the shadow of the Smoky Mtns., has a poverty rate of over 17%. Students will participate in both the construction of new homes as well as the rehabbing of older homes. Both will give opportunities for them to get to know families with whom they are working and make a marked difference in the communities. Off hours offer a multitude of incredible sightseeing in the Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas. Besides, the affiliate has become known as the center of Southern hospitality, which means GREAT Southern cooking! All are welcome to apply to this life changing adventure.

Drexel Newman's Alternative Spring Break seeks to carry on the mission of spirituality, service, and social fellowship through mentoring children and supporting the community of Saint Michaels, Arizona. Participants will take on a number of community development projects on the Navajo Reservation, an area where St. Katharine Drexel devoted her vocation. All are welcome.

Students will be staying on site at the Girl Scout Camp located in Cordesville, SC where we will help restore the camp to summer operating conditions by painting, cleaning up trails and helping restore and build cabins! This will be a great time to support an outdoor camp experience that truly makes a difference in other¿s lives through character development and learning valuable life skills.

The location is also about an hour from the beach, which will be a nice day trip.

Disaster/Flooding Relief

Students will be working with Community Collaborations International to provide assistance to areas affected by flooding in Atlanta, Georgia. This is a long term recovery effort, with an estimated 5,000 families who have lost homes and belongings due to flooding. Efforts may include working to restore homes and community buildings, maintaining public areas to provide environmental sustainability, and working with the boys and girls clubs. Asbury Ministry and One-in-Four will be working with Flint River Habitat for Humanity in Albany, Georgia. This is an opportunity to serve with like minded students who want to make an impact in combatting poverty.

We are also looking forward to having extra service opportunities to help with a women's shelter in Atlanta, Georgia. This will be a good way for our two student organizations to have activities that support the mission of both groups -- to promote service and education for the community.
