La Gran Vista

La Gran Vista is a model farm located near San Isidro de El General, Costa Rica which is 3 hours from San Jose, Costa Rica.  The purpose of the farm is to serve as a model to those in the surrounding area, and whose primary focus is soil conservation.  Oftentimes farmers in the area do not properly cultivate the soil and once the soil is no longer able to be used, surrounding areas of rain forest are cut to make room for more farming.  The duties and activities of volunteers include constructing terraces, planting soil-binding grasses, pasture rehabilitation, fence construction, vegetable cultivation, feeding various farm animals, planting fruit bearing trees, and constructing/maintaining greenhouses.  Volunteers will learn about farming, soil cultivation, and Costa Rica.  More information about this great opportunity can be found at www.lagranvista.com.  The total estimated cost will be approximately $900 per person, though University support and various fundraisers (both group and personal) are expected to lower out-of-pocket costs.
