Programs for Parents
Parents need to learn, too! Gather parents together in a group during the school day or in the early evening for an informal session about healthy eating. These lessons provide all the information you need to teach simple nutrition concepts to parents and guardians of your school students. Topics include MyPyramid, Low Fat Ideas and Healthy Snacks. Newsletters and fact sheets are available for reproduction.
Workshop: How Does My Pyramid Stack Up?
During this workshop we review how to use MyPyramid for healthy meal planning. Topics include portion sizes, fruits and vegetable consumption and calories. Parents participate in the game “How Does My Pyramid Stack Up?” by traveling to a number of food display stations and guessing which food group and how many servings is represented by each item. They learn how easily calories add up!
Workshop: Healthy Snacks for Kids (and Parents too!)
The nutrition educators emphasize fruit, whole grains and low-fat dairy foods as healthy snacks for kids. They learn about substituting healthy snacks for unhealthy choices. These topics are aimed at reinforcing the key role that parents play in their children’s food choices. Snack demonstrations during the lesson illustrate how easy (and tasty!) it is to prepare healthy alternatives.
Workshop: Cut the Fat
This workshop reviews how to lower the fat content of popular foods. Topics include sources of fat in various foods and why fat might be unhealthy. The lesson can be delivered as a power-point presentation. Visuals such as fat tubes which show the amount of fat in various foods, the five pound fat belt, and plastic fat models are used to make the message powerful!
