November 15, 2013
With a dramatic victory over Delaware in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament Drexel’s men’s soccer team earned its first trip to the title game of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. The Dragons will face William & Mary for the championship at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Vidas Field.
Drexel edged out Delaware in penalty kicks to advance to the championship after tying the Blue Hens, 2-2, at the end of overtime. Sophomore Joaquin del Rosario had two goals during regulation, his first two scores as a Dragon. The teams went through nine rounds of penalty kicks before the Dragons were able to clinch the contest on a kick by Felipe Fagundes that gave them a 7-6 advantage.
Rookie goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach, who earned All-Rookie and Second Team All-CAA honors this season, made seven saves during regulation and overtime play and made two more crucial stops during the shootout.
Head Coach Doug Hess’s squad will face a William & Mary team coming off a 6-3 win over UNC Wilmington on Thursday. The Tribe was one of the hottest teams in the country at mid-season, knocking off the No. 1 ranked teams in the nation in consecutive weeks. The Dragons came out on top, 2-1, in the teams’ only regular season meeting this year.
The Dragons will be playing for their first-ever CAA championship, having won or shared the regular season championship three times including the last two years.
Students with a valid Drexel ID will be admitted free at the Vidas Athletic Complex on 43rd and Powelton Ave.
