PHILADELPHIA, March 22, 2013

Senior Hollie Mershon led the Dragons past Iona 59-50 in the opening round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

Drexel’s women’s basketball team defeated Iona 59-50 to move on to the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The victory marks the second straight year that the team has advanced in postseason play and it is the fifth year in a row that the Dragons have earned a bid to a postseason tournament.

The Dragons were led by an excellent all-around game from senior Hollie Mershon who scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out six assists. Her classmate Taylor Wootton chipped in 13 points, all coming in the second half, to help Drexel pull away from the Gaels.

After trailing early in the game, Drexel took its first lead at the 2:27 mark of the first half on a three-pointer by Fiona Flanagan, who finished the game with 11 points. Mershon put the Dragons up for good with a three in the waning minutes of the period and scored the final seven points of the half to give her team a 23-18 lead at the break.

Drexel extended its advantage early in the second half and put the game out of reach on a pair of Flanagan three-pointers that gave the Dragons a 32-20 lead. Drexel held a comfortable margin for the duration of the game and pushed the lead to as much as 15 points in the second half.

The Dragons earned their WNIT bid by posting 20 wins in regular-season play and advancing to the CAA Championship game for the second year in a row. While the team lost a close 59-56 game to Delaware in the championship, Drexel’s overall performance on the season and down the stretch was enough to garner its fourth straight berth in the postseason WNIT.

The victory over Iona improved Drexel’s record to 23-10 on the season, one win away from tying the program’s record for wins in a single season. The Dragons will host Harvard at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. For ticket information visit www.DrexelTickets.com. A win against the Crimson, who the Dragons are facing for the first time, would mark the first time that the team has won two games in postseason play.
