A Message from President Fry: Mourning Student Evan Morris
July 29, 2011
Dear Members of the Drexel University Community,
I am deeply saddened to report that Drexel student Evan Morris, a 22-year-old senior of the Goodwin College, was found dead by Philadelphia Police early this morning in a private residence near campus. Although we do not yet have complete information about this tragedy, it appears that an altercation between Evan and a student from another university ultimately resulted in Evan’s death.
The non-Drexel student was immediately taken into custody by Philadelphia Police and posed no threat to the University community, and therefore a DrexelALERT was not sent. The Philadelphia Police Department is handling the investigation, with the cooperation of the Drexel Police and the University’s administration.
We have reached out to Evan’s family to offer our deepest condolences as well as any support we can provide.
Everyone at Drexel is affected when we lose one of our own, especially as a result of senseless violence. Those most affected, of course, are those who knew Evan well. Drexel’s Counseling Center is available to provide support to all who need it at this difficult time. Counseling professionals can be reached by calling 215-895-1415 or after regular hours at 215-416-3337.
I know our University community will stand together to mourn and remember Evan, and to give strength to his family and friends.
John A. Fry
