LeBow College of Business Teams with IBM for Case Competition

Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business, in conjunction with IBM, will host its first IBM Case Competition, a day-long business simulation in which student teams form companies and develop financial and sales strategies to meet a set standard of goals. The LeBow College IBM Case Competition will be held on October 17, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Matheson Hall and the Pearlstein Business Learning Center on Drexel’s Main Campus in University City.
“The IBM Case Competition affords our students the opportunity to simulate the real-life conditions they will face upon entering the corporate world,” said George P. Tsetsekos, Ph.D., dean of Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business. “LeBow College is committed to providing our students a high-quality, experience-based education, while providing the opportunity to meet and network with executives of IBM, one of the nation’s top employers.”
The competition is open to Drexel One-Year MBA, Two-Year MBA, MS Finance, and undergraduate senior business students. Thirty-two students have been selected by LeBow faculty and divided into four teams – three graduate students and one undergraduate student per team.
Representatives from IBM will present a case overview to the students, who will develop their business strategies then participate in two rounds of sales calls. The winner of the first two rounds will then vie in the final round, where each team will prepare a 12-minute presentation for the judges.
Teams will be judged and ranked by Dr. Michael Gombola, head of LeBow College’s Finance Department, and LeBow College marketing professors, Drs. Burt Brodo and Prabakar Kothandaraman, and IBM representatives. Prizes will be awarded and the winning team will visit IBM headquarters in Westchester County, NY.
The IBM Case Competition is one of several such competitions in which Drexel MBA students will participate. Case competitions are a new co-curricular element of the Drexel MBA curriculum at LeBow College entitled “The Business of Ambition.” This new component includes “The Eleventh Hour,” which is composed of case competitions; “The Marketplace,” a speakers’ series where students interact with leaders of various industries; and “The ROI,” which aligns students with career advisors to proactively advance careers or seek landings.
