New Recreation Center Groundbreaking

Students, faculty and staff are invited to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new recreation center on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at 5 p.m. on the north lawn, Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd Street and Lancaster Walk).

The Drexel Athletics Recreational Sports Fair and a cook-out will follow the ceremony. Designed by renowned architects Sasaki Associates, in association with Ewing Cole Engineers, Pennoni Associates and Turner Construction, this $41.6 million, 84,000 sq.ft. building will more than double the size of the recreational space in the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Set to open in December 2009, the recreation center will feature a climbing wall, multi-purpose gym, suspended running/walking track, workout instruction rooms, space for future squash courts, a nutritional juice bar and a 6,000 sq.ft. sports grille restaurant. The design incorporates many “green” features as part of Drexel’s commitment to sustainability.
