Fuller in Phila

Monday, October 14, 2013

4:00 PM-8:00 PM

The Fuller in Phila Symposium at Drexel’s ExCITe Center, co-sponsored by the Center for Mobilities Research and Policy, re-animates the ideas of pioneering inventor, designer and global thinker R. Buckminster Fuller.

As World Fellow in Residence here (1972-1983), Bucky advanced his life’s work in architecture and sustainable design, including his books Synergetics 1&2 and Critical Path, which envisions designs to survive planetary disasters. With keynote speakers Eva Diaz ("Screening the Cold War"), Tim Wessels ("Fuller in Phila: The Last Decade"), Mimi Sheller ("Emergence by Emergency and Sustainability Today"), plus a hands-on design workshop with Joseph D. Clinton (The Dance of a "Jitterbug" Triangle Tesselation), we explore the significance of Fuller’s thought today.

Please register at:
https://fullerinphl.eventbrite.com/

The workshop will give each participant the opportunity to make and take a model of one of the developments emerging from Fuller’s original thought. The model will illustrate the physical realities of applying the synergetic geometry principles of rotation and translation transformations of a linkage of triangles from one symmetry form to another. Each participant will also receive a CD containing animated films and reference materials that will illustrate the theoretical application of the mathematical abstractions.
