      A scientific review panel met on November 5, 2008, to evaluate the 38 applications that were submitted for funding by the formula funds from the CURE settlement of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the tobacco industry. The panel contained faculty from the College of Medicine (basic and clinical scientists) and from other schools and colleges of Drexel University. The review was rigorous and conducted according to the traditional process used by NIH study sections.

      June F. Klinghoffer, MD, an alumna of Woman's Medical College and revered faculty member who taught at the College of Medicine for five decades, passed away on May 3, 2008. She was 87. Dr. Klinghoffer continued to participate in College of Medicine activities in recent years, serving on Drexel's Legacy Committee and as co-chair of the campaign to build a permanent home for the College's archives.       Robert Morris University (RMU), Drexel University College of Medicine, and Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) today announced plans to launch a unique, collaborative medical education program designed to attract promising students who will ultimately practice medicine in the Pittsburgh region.

      The Scholars Articulation Program will recruit qualified high school seniors to enroll in RMU's pre-medicine program in preparation for attending medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. During their undergraduate career, students will complete a pre-professional internship at AGH, which is a regional campus of Drexel University College of Medicine. Then, during their final two years of medical school, they will return to the hospital for a clerkship and a clinical rotation.

    • 15th Annual Pediatric AIDS Benefit Concert - January 26, 2008

      January 17, 2008

      This year marks the 15th annual Pediatric AIDS Benefit Concert, an event which has raised over $250,000 for the pediatric AIDS program at St. Christopher's Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. The AIDS program at St. Christopher's Hospital is the largest of its kind in the tri-state area, providing comprehensive care for hundreds of HIV infected children and their families. Included in this specialized HIV care are social services, well-child care and substance abuse counseling. The money raised by the benefit concert helps to finance the services of a dietician and a child-life specialist for the program, and offers the children the opportunity to attend a summer camp which many of them would be unable to experience otherwise. Additionally, the money raised by the PABC provides families affected by this illness with financial support for emergency funds needed for housing, transportation and other expenses.

      Drexel University College of Medicine scientists, in partnership with the Hepatitis B Foundation, may have discovered a reliable alternative to liver biopsy for the early detection of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, diseases affecting more than five million Americans. People with hepatitis B and C infections, as well as fatty liver diseases, are at greatest risk for progressing to cirrhosis that can lead to liver cancer.

    • Researchers use magnets to guide cells to targets in the body

      January 14, 2008

      A study team, led by Boris Polyak, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, has used magnetically responsive nanoparticles to drive healthy cells to targeted sites in blood vessels. The research, done in animals, may lead to a new method of delivering cells and genes to repair injured or diseased organs in people. The study appears in the January 15th edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
