Woman One Award Ceremony Raises Over $250,000 for Scholarships

On Monday, April 25, the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership held its 14th Annual Woman One Award Ceremony at the Rittenhouse Hotel in Philadelphia. The ceremony honors a woman of exceptional leadership while also raising scholarship funds for talented, underrepresented women in medicine who, after graduating from Drexel University College of Medicine, intend to serve disadvantaged communities. This year's award winner was Reneé Amoore, innovative entrepreneur, health care advocate and CEO of The Amoore Group.

Examining Drexel's Ties to the First African-American Women Physicians

For much of our nation's history, women, especially women of color, had little access to any formal education, let alone medical training. The first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States did so in 1849, and the first African-American woman to do the same graduated in 1864. The tides turned after the world's first medical school for women, the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (FMCP), provided students opportunities to earn a medical degree, including several of the first African-American women physicians in the country.

Woman One Scholarship Program Reaches New Milestone

Scholarships for the Woman One program will now be raised to $100,000 over four years of medical study. The scholarships are presented by the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership of Drexel University College of Medicine and are awarded annually to women from underrepresented populations seeking to become physicians. The announcement was made during an event honoring the 2015 Woman One Award recipient Lynne Honickman.
