A scientific review panel met on November 5, 2008, to evaluate the 38 applications that were submitted for funding by the formula funds from the CURE settlement of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the tobacco industry. The panel contained faculty from the College of Medicine (basic and clinical scientists) and from other schools and colleges of Drexel University. The review was rigorous and conducted according to the traditional process used by NIH study sections.

Program: The proceeds of our annual grant from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation are used to support collaborative translational research projects that involve co-investigators from the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems and a clinical department in medicine, nursing or public health (either within Drexel or outside of Drexel). The goal of this program is to support collaborative translational research that is focused on creating health care products that address unmet or poorly met clinical needs and lead to improvements in patient health care.

Public Access Policy is Now a Requirement
In accordance with Division G, Title II, Section 218 of PL 110-161 (Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008 ), the NIH voluntary Public Access Policy (NOT-OD-05-022) is now mandatory. The law states:

The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law.
