The field of materials science and engineering typically involves working directly with materials of various types - metals, ceramics, polymers, composites - to study their processing, structure and properties. Access to appropriate research equipment is key to the work of materials scientists and engineers, and these facilities cover a broad range of size scales (from bulk samples to nano materials), materials types, and properties.
Advanced characterization instrumentation enables researchers to learn more about materials and their properties, including surface and internal imaging; mechanical responses to stress, tension, torsion, fatigue, or impact; and the effects of environmental changes such as temperature, pressure, or exposure to different environments and test conditions.
Modern materials synthesis capabilities allow researchers to produce, form or process materials in novel ways, either in bulk or one atomic layer at a time.
Drexel Materials enjoys access to a wide range of materials synthesis and characterization capabilities, either through individual faculty laboratories within the department itself, or through Drexel University's Core Facilities.
