PhD Candidate Amanda Huon Receives SCGSR Fellowship

Amanda HuonPhD candidate Amanda Huon (advisor: Dr. Steve May) has received a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Fellowship award for the project, “Neutron scattering studies of multiferroic CaMn7O12- based heterostructures,” to be conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) over nine months beginning July 2016.

SCGSR awards are made in recognition of outstanding academic accomplishments and the merit of the proposed research, and reflect the awardee’s potential to advance in his/her PhD studies and make important contributions to the mission of the DOE Office of Science.

At ORNL, Amanda will have access to state-of-the-art neutron facilities and will work with numerous staff scientists. As a SCGSR Fellow, Amanda will be conducting research with Dr. Michael Fitzsimmons, a world-leader in the use of neutrons to study magnetic oxide heterostructures. Her research will focus on utilizing cutting-edge neutron techniques to explore the chiral magnetic states in complex oxide thin films, specifically CaMn7O12 –related quadruple perovskites that are of interest for their multiferroic properties.

Amanda is the second Drexel Materials student to receive an SCGSR Fellowship. Boris Dyatkin (advisor: Yury Gogotsi) previously received the award in 2015.
