The vision of the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation is ambitious, yet achievable. Through its educational programming, its community partnerships, its innovative projects, its cross-disciplinary work, its public policy initiatives, and its community-based participatory research, the Lindy Institute will provide a powerful catalyst for dialogue and problem-solving about urban issues around the world.
The founding vision for the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation includes a planned emphasis on five major areas, each of which reflects the underlying mission, vision and values of the Lindy Institute and the University by fostering urban community problem-solving, experiential learning with diverse constituents, regional economic vitality and growth, and rigorous, collaborative, academic scholarship.
- The Lindy Center for Civic Engagement
The foundation for the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation has been established, in part, by the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement. As one of the initial five major project areas within the Lindy Institute, the Lindy Center will continue to focus on promoting social responsibility and public service by facilitating community-based experiential learning for students, faculty, and professional staff. Current Lindy Center activities reflect the Institute themes of Involvement, Innovation, and Impact.
- The Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships
The Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships is the second major project area in the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation and will be the community centerpiece for Drexel’s tradition of experiential education and civic engagement, promoting the three Institute themes of Involvement, Innovation, and Impact. Building on the model of the great extension centers of public land-grant universities, the Dornsife Center at Drexel will be a physical center in its neighborhood where the University's academic knowledge and expertise can be accessible to residents for problem solving and addressing local needs.
- The Neighborhood Initiatives
Drexel’s Neighborhood Initiatives reflect a multi-year strategy for community involvement and for creating a positive impact in the neighborhood surrounding Drexel’s University City campus and beyond. Since 2010, Drexel’s neighborhood initiatives have focused on creating a clean, safe, and sustainable neighborhood with an increased investment in safety infrastructure; on fostering an affordable residential community with programs – such as the Employee Home Purchase Assistance Program – to encourage owner occupancy; on providing greater access to health and wellness resources for local residents; on focusing on economic development to provide opportunities for neighborhood residents; on creating partnerships with neighborhood public schools; and on building partnerships to create vibrant retail and commercial corridors near campus.
- Public Policy Projects
The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation will collaborate closely with Drexel faculty to produce rigorous, innovative scholarship that has real-world positive impact on urban issues. The Center for Public Policy at Drexel University already supports interdisciplinary policy-oriented scholarship among faculty and other external affiliates and engages students in research through its innovative Master of Science in Public Policy degree program. The Center for Public Policy and its faculty affiliates will collaborate with the Lindy Institute to help build the academic and scholarly focus.
- Educational Initiatives
The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation will foster partnerships with corporations, foundations, and sponsors to improve the quality of education in the region. The Drexel-PECO Community Education Collaborative, made possible by a grant from PECO, is one such partnership. Through the Lindy Institute, we will reach out to other like-minded partners to expand Drexel’s reach and increase our positive impact on education in the region.
