Saturdays for Seniors
Hello! My name is Sean Orzolek and I am the DCS site leader for Saturday for Seniors at the Old Pine Community Center. I am a pre-junior Materials Engineering student with a concentration in nanomaterials. I am involved in Circle K, materials research society among other things.
Saturday for Seniors is a program that was developed 26 years ago by two members of the Old Pine Presbyterian Church. This program is designed to help low income senior citizens of all race and religious affiliation by giving them a warm meal every Saturday morning. Each week about 50-60 Seniors come, it is important to realize that poverty comes in many forms, not solely lack of money but these seniors suffer from emotional poverty loneliness; and it is our job to show them a good time and make them feel comfortable.
This event runs from 9am-2pm each Saturday morning and 2-3 volunteers are needed each week to help prepare the meals, interact with the seniors or help around the community center. SEPTA tokens are included and we will meet as a group Saturday morning and travel to the site together. If you have a special skill or hobby that you would like to present to the seniors please let me know so that we can make arrangements, for example there is a piano in the room where the seniors eat.
If this sounds like something you would like to get involved in or you have questions please send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you very much and have a wonderful day!
