Those who attend the Community-Based and Engaged Learning Instructor Training will also have access to a Blackboard Learn page with readings, tools for implementing community-engaged learning, example syllabi, and training materials.

JOURNALS OF COMMUNITY-BASED AND ENGAGED LEARNING

While some faculty publish engaged scholarship in discipline-specific journals, books, and other mediums, some find opportunities in journals that specifically discuss engaged work in higher education or the approaches taken to do such work. Campus Compact offers a useful table showing a wide collection of journals and the types of writing typically invited/published by them. Below we've highlighted some common places where Drexel Faculty submit and publish. 

• Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

  An on-line, refereed journal concerned with exploring community engagement and community-based learning perspective, research, and practice. The journal publishes accounts of a range of research focusing on practical and theoretical insights and understanding, in higher education and across the disciplines and professions. There is a focus on case studies emphasizing community engagement and engaged learning practices, methodology, and pedagogy.

• Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship

  A peer-reviewed international journal through which faculty, staff, students, and community partners disseminate scholarly works. JCES integrates teaching, research, and community engagement in all disciplines, addressing critical problems identified through a community-participatory process.

• Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement

  Peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal to advance theory and practice related to all forms of outreach and engagement between higher education institutions and communities. This includes highlighting innovative endeavors; critically examining emerging issues, trends, challenges, and opportunities; and reporting on studies of impact in the areas of public service, outreach, engagement, extension, engaged research, community-based research, community-based participatory research, action research, public scholarship, service-learning, and community service.

• Journal of Participatory Research Methods

  An open access journal focusing on the methods, techniques and processes involved in conducting the research rather than on the findings and outcomes of the work. JPRM publishes scholarly articles about methods, how-to guides for group work, participatory data collection and analysis techniques and narrative reports of the techniques and processes involved in participatory research.

• Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning

  An open access, peer-reviewed journal that publishes research, theory, and pedagogy pertinent to service-learning and civic and community engagement. MJCSL is a vehicle to publish evidence-based solutions to the most pressing challenges of the field.

GRANT RESOURCES TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING AND ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP

Below is a list of organizations or groups that periodically offer grant opportunities for engaged projects, courses, research, or other initiatives between campus and community partners. • Americorps Research and Evaluation

  Americorps is an agency within the federal government, has historically extended calls research grants to institutions of higher education to support participatory research between scholars from universities and communities.

• Campus Compact

  Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to advancing the public purposes of higher education. a national nonprofit organization. Campus Compact is the largest and oldest higher education association dedicated to higher education civic and community engagement. Members make up a force of thousands of presidents, faculty, researchers, students, and civic and community engagement experts at colleges and universities. It offers periodic grant opportunities for the development of community partnerships, courses, and special projects related to engaged learning.

• Engaged Scholarship Consortium

  ESC offers periodic funding opportunities to support scholarship in ways mutually beneficial for the university scholar and for the community. A small grants program has been developed to: increase faculty involvement in engaged scholarship; increase awareness of the wealth of engaged research/creative activities occurring at member universities; enhance the level and amount of engaged research/creative activities that occur at member universities; enhance the ability of ESC member faculty to conduct engaged interdisciplinary research/creative activities within and between member universities.

• Imagining America

  IA brings together scholars, artists, designers, humanists, and organizers to imagine, study, and enact a more just and liberatory ‘America’ and world. Working across institutional, disciplinary, and community divides, IA strengthens and promotes public scholarship, cultural organizing, and campus change that inspires collective imagination, knowledge-making, and civic action on pressing public issues. By dreaming and building together in public, IA creates the conditions to shift culture and transform inequitable institutional and societal structures.

• Place-Based Justice Network

  PBJN periodically offers small grants for “catalyst” projects that prioritize deep collaboration between campus and community partners. These funds are often intended to begin or set in motion long-term partnerships or work that can be sustained over time.

• Partners for Campus and Community Engagement

  PCCE facilitates campus-community dynamics by including community partners as equal members. It is a regional (NY and PA) higher ed organization in the region that serves all institution types – two-year, four-year, public, and independent – and includes community partners in our membership and governance. They seek to advance equitable, place-based community engagement, provided grant support for campuses, and developed innovative professional development for members in the region.

   

  OPPORTUNITIES FOR ASSOCIATIONS, GATHERINGS, AND CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND GATHERING IN COMMUNITY-ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP

  • Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) – Civic Learning

    A national Conferences, webinars, and smaller gatherings related to pedagogical approaches in civic and community engagement.

  • Coalition for Urban and Metropolitan Universities

    A coalition that supports the creation and dissemination of knowledge on the issues that face our urban and metropolitan campuses and the communities they serve. CUMU works to ensure sustained attention to the exchange of information and ideas among member institutions about higher education’s role in urban and metropolitan settings, engender a unified approach to the resolution of common challenges, and develops a clearer understanding within the higher education community and among public policy makers and the public about the distinctive roles played by urban and metropolitan institutions.

  • Campus Compact

    A national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement, and service-learning in higher education.Campus Compact holds national and regional gatherings and conferences, as well as hosts webinars and other educational opportunities to support the development of community-engaged learning and scholarship.

  • Engaged Scholarship Consortium

    A non-profit educational organization composed of higher education member institutions, a mix of state-public and private institutions. ESC’s goal is to work collaboratively to build strong university-community partnerships anchored in the rigor of scholarship and designed to help build community capacity.

  • Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHENND)

    PHENND is a consortium of 36 colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia area to revitalize local communities and schools and foster civic responsibility among the region's colleges and universities.

  • Mayor of Philadelphia’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service

    OCEVS assists with connecting volunteers to opportunities, and funded opportunities for young people to contribute to issues in their community. The office can offer training resources and a connection to local efforts for social change. OCEVS helps residents make positive changes in their communities by reducing barriers and expanding capacity for participation.

  • Place-Based Justice Network

    PBJN holds an annual summer institute to gather member institutions and other interested community-engagement professionals to explore justice-oriented approaches to supporting infrastructure, programs, partnerships, and teaching strategies related to the field. Speakers and sessions often critically challenge traditional frameworks of service-learning and campus-community power dynamics.

  • Society for the Study of Social Problems

  While this group primarily utilizes a Sociological approach to examining issues, they often welcome interdisciplinary presenters, journal contributions, and participants. They hold an annual gathering in the summer each year, opportunities for grants and other scholarships, and publications to examine social problems from a particular standpoint.
