April 18, 2016

Students from the Community Lawyering Clinic have published a 62-page guidebook, “Do It Yourself (DIY) Philadelphia: A Guide for How to File an Employment Discrimination Claim.”

3Ls Shaina Hicks and Ryan McCarthy completed the guidebook, with oversight from Professor Rachel López and contributions from ’15 alumna Brooke Blackman Cheng.

In addition to compiling the information, the students have conducted a series of training sessions in the community to familiarize private citizens with their rights as employees and job candidates and the steps to follow if discrimination occurs.

The students held training sessions at the following locations:

  • Pratt Early Childhood Center on North 22nd Street
  • Eastern Service Workers office on South Street
  • Mantua Haverford Community Center on North 39th Street
  • Powelton Village Civic Association at 35th and Baring streets

Another session will be offered as part of an Open House event the clinic will hold for Mantua and Powelton Village residents on April 20.

Electronic copies of the book have been distributed to all Philadelphia legal service providers, and hard copies will be made available to public libraries in Philadelphia.  Legal service providers buy hard copies of the book at a nominal cost by contacting the clinic at CLC@drexel.edu.
