Faculty Present Strategies for Clinic, Legal Writing Collaborations

Faculty members presented at “Bringing Outside In: Social Justice Collaborations in the Legal Writing Curriculum,” a one-day workshop hosted at the law school on June 29 and at the Legal Writing Institute's biennial conference in Philadelphia on June 30 to July 2. 

Professors Richard Frankel, Rachel Lopez and Emily Zimmerman discussed tactics for launching projects that weave together legal writing and clinical activities at the workshop, which preceded the LWI conference.  

Frankel directs the law school's Appellate Litigation Clinic.  Lopez directs the law school's new Community Lawyering Clinic.  Zimmerman teaches Legal Writing, and she has conducted empirical research on the ways that diverse teaching methods affect law students. 

Professor Susan Brooks, the law school's associate dean for experiential learning, presented at a separate session on setting goals and assessing progress in projects law schools design to integrate legal writing with social justice work in clinical programs. 

At the LWI conference, Professors Terry Seligmann and Karl Okamoto discussed innovations in legal education, such as using the LawMeets model that incorporates live simulations.  And Professors Amy Montemarano and Nancy Kraybill presented at a separate session on preparing students to take the bar exam.
