Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) attorney Abbe Flitter visited the law school to speak about her transition from law firm practice to in-house counsel at CHOP. 

Flitter's legal career began post-college when she was accepted to the paralegal program at Skadden Arps, Slate Meagher & Flom, a large and well-respected law firm in New York City.  Her work at Skadden eventually led her to pursue public interest work and a law degree, she said.  After receiving her law degree, Flitter was a litigation attorney at Ballard Spahr, LLP, a large Philadelphia based law firm.  Flitter said that although she did a lot of pre-trial litigation work during her six-year tenure at Ballard, she hardly saw the inside of a courtroom.  Thus, she was grateful when a cold-call from a legal recruiter serendipitously led her to her current in-house counsel position at CHOP.

At CHOP, Flitter supervises litigation and also handles complex employment issues.  Given that employment policies at CHOP concern the intersection of healthcare, employment and contractual issues, Flitter finds her work continually challenging and intellectually stimulating. More importantly, however, Flitter said she is fortunate to work with so many smart legal and medical practitioners that are willing to maintain a sound and ethical legal approach to innovating children's medical care.
